For the very first time in 69 years, the University of Ibadan (UI) has produced its first graduate with a First Class honours degree in History.

The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, said Ozibo Ekele of the Department of History, was one of the 186 students who earned First Class degrees at the 2015/2016 convocation ceremonies, which began Monday, November 13, in Ibadan.

Olayinka said 5,629 students graduated in various academic programmes from 12 faculties, including the Distance Learning Centre at the convocation.

According to him, 186 passed with first class honours, 1,538 finished with Second Class Upper, while 3,133 finished with Second Class Lower.

Similarly, 434 students finished with Third Class, while 81 others graduated with Pass degrees.

The VC enjoined the graduates to be good ambassadors of the university, saying they should impact positively on their world.

He remarked that the students would have graduated a long time ago but for the strike embarked upon by the academic and non-academic staff unions.

According to him, the breakdown of the graduating list showed that 3.5 per cent and 28.6 per cent finished with First Class and Second Class (Upper) honours, respectively.

“I am aware that there has been strident public criticism of the large number of first class graduates from our universities.

“We are exceedingly proud of all Ibadan graduates.

“We see this phenomenon from the strategic point of view of input-process-output.

“The University of Ibadan has arguably the most competitive mechanism for undergraduate admissions in the country.

“This has been attested to consistently by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, in which Ibadan is the only university in the country ranked among the topmost 1,000 universities in the world,’’ the VC said.

He was full of praises for Ekele for breaking the jinx as the department had never produced a first class student since inception.

“We warmly congratulate Ozibo Ekele, who is graduating today with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 6.6 out of a maximum of 7.0,’’ the VC said.

Meanwhile, giving a valedictory speech on behalf of others, the overall best graduating student in Law, Tolulope Ogunmodede, attributed their successes to hard work and prayers.

On his personal experience, Ogunmodede said that although he faced challenges during his academic pursuit, he was focused on his priorities.

He urged his fellow graduates to generate ideas that could make them entrepreneurs and not to trade their integrity for anything evil.

It has been revealed that French President Emmanuel Macron persuaded President Donald Trump not to pullout U.S. soldiers in Syria to enable him launch airstrikes as punishment for the Bashar al-Assad led-government for an alleged chemical weapons attack on his people.

Macron made the confession while appearing in a two-hour live broadcast on French television BFM and online investigative site Mediapart.

The 40-year-old leader said the U.S., Britain and France had “full international legitimacy to intervene” in order to enforce international humanitarian law.

The allies fired missiles early Saturday at three chemical-weapons facilities in Syria to punish the regime for the alleged use of chemical weapons in the town of Douma.

“It was retaliation, not an act of war,” Macron said in justifying the operation a day before the French parliament was set to debate it.

“The airstrikes marked Macron’s biggest foreign policy yet. Nearly a year into his term, the new president declared France the most active country on the diplomatic field and at the United Nations.

“Ten days ago President Trump wanted the United States of America to withdraw from Syria. We convinced him to remain,” he said, speaking in the majestic room of Chaillot National Theater, with the Eiffel Tower shining in the background.”

He said France now wants to involve Western powers, Russia and Turkey in a new diplomatic initiative to find a sustainable political solution in Syria.

Macron also offered to play the role of intermediary between the United States and Russia.

An FCT High Court, Maitama, on Monday reserved ruling in the trial-within-trial of Matthew Ankyoor, standing trial for allegedly killing his pregnant wife.

Justice Peter Affen, who adjourned the case indefinitely, said that the date of the ruling would be communicated to counsel in the suit.

Affen adjourned the matter after counsel adopted their written addresses on the trial- within -trial filed by Ankyoor.

Ankyoor is standing trial on a three-count charge bordering on killing his wife who was pregnant.

He was first arraigned on Oct. 24, 2017, and he pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against him.

The judge had ordered for trial-within-trial to ascertain the voluntariness of the statement made by Ankyoor to the police.

Affen gave the order after the defendant’s counsel, Mr Ocheme Adama, objected to the tendering of the statement in evidence by the prosecuting counsel, Donatus Abah, through his first witness, Insp. Raymond Isama.

At the resumed sitting on Monday, the defendant counsel urged the court to discharge the defendant of the allegations leveled against him.

He said a look at the endorsement on the face of the confessional statement purported to have been made by the defendant, showed it  was not voluntarily made

He said that the statement stated in part that the defendant was under duress and was forced to make the statement.

Responding, the prosecuting counsel urged the court to allow the defendant to enter defence, adding that the endorsement pointed out by the defence was a printing error .

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN, reports that Ankyoor,  told the court that he was brought from Lugbe on June 9, 2017, to FCT Police Command Office, Homicide Section, where he made a statement.

He went further to say that the words were dictated, while he was slapped, hit and forced to write what they(police ) were dictating to him.

The prosecution witness, ASP John Utache, who endorsed the statements of Ankyoor, in response told the court that the confessional statements were made by the defendant voluntarily.

” He wrote it voluntarily, he was not tortured , intimidated nor under duress, he told me he wrote it voluntarily when he was brought by Insp. Raymond Isama, of the Homicide Section of the FCT Police Command,’’ he said.

When he was asked to write out what was in the statement by the defendant counsel, he wrote  that he was “tortured, intimidated” to make the statement. (NAN )

APC tenure elongation dispute: Court fixes May 14 for judgment

$

The Federal High Court Abuja, has fixed May 14 to deliver judgment in a suit seeking to void the one-year tenure extension that was granted to the National Working Committee (NWC),of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The plaintiff, Mr Ademorin Kuye led some other members of the party to file the suit after the party extended the tenure of NWC by one year.

The defendants are, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), APC and its National Chairman, Mr John Oyegun and the National Organising Secretary, Sen. Osita Izunaso.

The plaintiffs on March 15, obtained an ex parte order directing the defendants to show cause why members of the NWC of the APC should not be barred from parading themselves as national officials of the party.

When the matter was called on Monday, counsel to Kuye, Mr Ahmed Raji (SAN), told the court that they were in court to seek an interpretation to Section 223 of the 1999 Constitution.

He said they wanted an interpretation as to whether the section was mandatory or a mere dead letter of the law.

“We have argued that Section 223 is mandatory and the philosophy behind it is to ensure that political parties conduct their affairs in a democratic manner.

“Therefore by whatever decision can a political party extend tenure especially almost half way to the end of the tenure where there is no emergency.”

He argued that if there was an emergency such as the country was at war, then it could be considered.

He, however, maintained that there was no such emergency currently in the country to warrant such an action.

He urged the court to avoid an interpretation that would render Section 223 of the constitution useless adding that the four years stipulated for a tenure, should be adhered to.

He disagreed with the defendants that the matter was a domestic affair of the party and internal remedies had not been exhausted.

According to him, the highest organ of the party, the National Working Committee, (NEC), wants to overrule the president, that cannot be a domestic affair.

Counsel to INEC , Mr Idris Yakubu said that the commission had no position in the matter and was bound by the decision of the court.

APC’s counsel, Mr Joseph Daudu (SAN), urged the court to dismiss the suit on the grounds that it was premature as it was filed based on fear, speculations and political calculations.

“The plaintiff has said that their case resolves around Section 223, with profound respect, it does not, because their case is not about interpretation of Section 223.

“This is because that section is clear and straight forward as to the kind of constitution a political party must posses before coming into existence and Article 17 of the party’s constitution already satisfies that.”

According to Daudu, what they are asking the court to do has not arisen yet as there is no instrument before the court showing that there is an elongation.

Daudu argued that besides the fact that the plaintiff lacked “locus standi”, the case was a demonstration of why the court should not interfere since the party was trying to self resolve the issue.

“These kind of cases should be left to the political parties and the court can only come in if there is a clear breach of the party constitution, but there has been no breech in this case.

“Politicians must be allowed to do their thing so long as it is legal and falls within the ambits of the law.”

Mr Akin Olujimi (SAN), counsel to Oyegun aligned himself with the submissions of Daudu and prayed the court to dismiss the suit.

Olujimi further argued that the resolution which the plaintiff, (Kuye) alleged was reached by the NEC of APC on Feb. 27 was the foundation of the suit but that the said resolution was not placed before the court.

“What they are asking the court to do is to engage in speculation and the court cannot engage in speculation.

“Instead of that resolution which they alleged, they have come up with newspaper reports which this court, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court has held in several cases that cannot prove anything.”

According to Olujimi, their case is founded on tenure elongation but there is nothing like that before the court.

On his part, Mr James Onoja (SAN) counsel to Izunaso, contended that his client was not supposed to be a party to the suit since the case around his client was that of a waiver and not tenure elongation.

Onoja who filed a preliminary objection challenging the competence of the suit also urged the court to dismiss it.

The trial judge, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba fixed May 14 to deliver judgment.(NAN).

Buhari should stop lamenting, he’s among past leaders who caused Nigeria’s problems-Fayose says

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has told President Muhammadu
Buhari to stop behaving like a “weeping president” by lamenting about
what his predecessors failed to do and blaming past leaders for the
inability of his administration to fulfill his campaign promises,
adding that; “Only a leader like President Buhari that lacked
competence and is challenged by knowledge and exposure will blame his
predecessors for over three years.”

The governor, who described the president’s statement on Sunday while
receiving some members of the Buhari Diaspora Support Organisation in
London as shameful, said; “it appears he (Buhari) has forgotten that
he is also among the past leaders of Nigeria because blaming past
leaders for the country’s economic problems amounts to blaming
himself. The negative foundation the likes of President Buhari laid
caused the problems of the country.”

In a statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Monday, by his Special Assistant
on Public Communications and New media, Lere Olayinka, the governor
said; “It is appalling that Buhari, who at his very young age was
Military Governor of the of the North Eastern State, Petroleum
Minister, Head of State and later Chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund
(PTF) under the Abacha administration is the same person that is
blaming past leaders of Nigeria.

“What difference did he make as Governor of the North Eastern State?
What was his role as Minister of Petroleum and Chairman of the
Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) when it was created in
1977?

“It is on record that it was during President Buhari’s tenure as
Minister of Petroleum that N2.8 billion went missing from the accounts
of the NNPC in Midlands Bank in the United Kingdom. N2.8 billion as at
that time is like $2.8 billion (over N1 trillion) now.

“It is also on record that President Buhari was a key player in the
Abacha government that the country is still recovering its loots up
till today. Interestingly, our Mr. Integrity President once said that
Abacha never stole.

“Fact that President must face is that he has blamed everyone,
including the late President of Libya, Muammar Gaddafi. He is now
blaming himself as part of the past leaders of Nigeria, it is
shameful.

“If the President is someone who faces reality, he would have
realized that his goodwill has declined to the lowest level. He will
also realize that in 2015, Nigerians did not really vote to elect him
as President. Rather, it was a vote from the North against PDP’s
failure to pick a northern candidate that made him President.”

No amount of pressure will make me reconcile with Gov Badaru – Sen Shitu

Serving senator of the all progressive party in Jigawa state representing Jigawa North central Ubali Shitu said that no amount of pressure will makes him change his mind and give room for reconciliation with Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar.

Ubali Shitu made the disclosure over the weekend while responding to questions from newsmen in his home town Hadejia, He said no political blackmail or intimidation will forced him to abundant his decision.

Senator Ubali Shitu had been at loggerhead with Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar for accusing the governor of plotting to substitute him with his deputy governor Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, who is finishing his second terms as deputy governor in 2019.

“My case is not for senate seat I wanted to contest for governor seat , I want to replace him because he is not performing from the look of thing in jigawa he is the governor and also a contractor as well as dictator there is no way we can allowed such thing to continue to happen”He stated.

“I challenge him because in jigawa as a hole there was nothing to show executed but only the completion project by previous administration of governor sule lamido every body knows that lamido has done well for jigawa people if we can do justice to our self”

The senator’s impasse with the governor, like many other states controlled by the APC, is getting worse despite the reconciliation efforts by the party through its leader, former Lagos state Governor, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Senator Shitu declared that his quarrel with the governor is irreconcilable, as twelve efforts were made in the past but in all of them the governor had continued to break the earlier promises he made.

According to the senator, “The governor has turned the state to his personal business enterprise together with his wives and cronies. This, we would reject; and I will, in-shaa-Allah, engineer his replacement come 2019,” he stated.

“My disagreement with Governor Badaru started in the 2015 presidential election when he insisted that we vote for former President Goodluck Jonathan, against Muhammad Buhari, which I vehemently kicked against,” he revealed.

He also alleged that Governor Badaru is all out to use his position as governor to expand his business enterprise where he alone awards contracts to his friends and wives without following due process in the state.

Special Assistant to the governor on media, Bello Zaki, debunked all the allegations tabled by the senator against Governor Badaru.

He said the Senator is just a dawning man clutching at a straw, having lost favour with his constituents for betraying the party and President Muhammad Buhari.

“His trouble started when he betrayed the APC, the President and his people by backing and taking side with Senators Bukola Saraki and Ike Ikweremadu to emerge as Senate President and deputy against party’s wish.

“Instead of him to retract his steps, he continued to insult his people by accompanying Saraki to attend his corruption trials in court. That’s how he lost favour with his people. Governor Badaru’s sin was washing his hands off the man and telling him to go and settle things with his constituents in his own way.”

Zaki added that all the noise the senator was making is nothing but a prelude to defection to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as he was recently seen accompanying former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido. He knows that his political career with APC is finished.

It could also be recalled that Campaign Coordinators of Senator Ubali Shitu representing Jigawa North East from the constituency have distanced themselves from the utterances the senator made that he will go against Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar coming up 2019 general election.

Campaign Coordinators of Senator Ubali Shitu representing Jigawa North East and some All Progressives Congress party faithfuls at the moment do not want to be identified with him.

The constituents made this statement when they stormed Government House to make their voices heard over the emerging political battle that has been rocking the party

Rabiu Zakar Masama of Kirikasamma who spoke on behalf of the delegation after hours of a close door meeting with the governor said they came to see the governor and also to distance themselves from the statement of Senator Ubali Shitu who early vowed to unseat Governor Badaru Abubakar come 2019.

Even if those who were most vocal in condemnation when the situation appeared very dire are now uttering some muted acknowledgment that it has improved, we must continue to draw inspiration from well-meaning and right thinking Nigerians who were gracious enough to publicly acknowledge that they are saving some money from diesel and the money they used to spend for generators; they are running their generators for fewer hours; and they are getting comparably more power than before. Why I Kidnapped My Mentor Over $30,000 Deal – Yahoo Boy

suspected internet fraudster a.k.a Yahoo Yahoo, has confessed how he kidnapped his boss’ brother after he was sidelined in a whopping $30,000 deal. The gallant Nigerian security operatives have apprehended a Yahoo boy identified as Uchenna Eze, who reportedly kidnapped his boss’ brother, Alvin Onuoha.

According to a reporters, the suspect who is an indigene of Imo State, and was paraded yesterday with his alleged accomplice, Vincent Uchenna, by Lagos State Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal, said he abducted his victim because he was sidelined in a $30,000 deal.

While speaking to correspondents, the Police boss said the suspects and four others at large, committed the offence around 5:20pm, on April 6, in Ajah, Lagos, adding that the suspects bundled Onuoha into a Toyota Camry saloon car, while he was about entering his compound.

The commissioner said:
Quote
“Onuoha was returning from work and on getting to the gate of his house, he was kidnapped by six men operating in a Toyota Camry and a motorcycle. He was taken to an unknown destination.

“Two of the suspects were arrested when they went to collect the N200,000 ransom they demanded. During interrogation, the mastermind of the kidnapping, Eze Douglas Uchenna, confessed to have stayed with the victim in the same house.

“He said $30,000 was initially demanded as ransom, before they reduced it to N200,000. Investigation into the matter is on.”

Also speaking to journalits during his parade, Eze said he only wanted to get his money from his boss, who was fond of denying him his share of their loot from swindling.

He said: “We were into Yahoo business (Internet fraud) and he said whenever we made money, it would be shared on 60/40 per cent. I agreed and brought businesses to him, but each time we made money, he would deny me my 40 per cent share.

“The first one we did together, we made $4,300. Instead of giving me my share, he gave me N300,000. I still stayed with him and kept bringing jobs to him. I finished another work and handed over the details to him so he could follow up with payment.

“We made $30,000 from the job, but he kept telling me they haven’t payed. So, one of the guys who used to live with us in my boss’ room called me from Philippines and told me that he had made money and that he is now a rich man.

“I went to my boss and asked him how far about the payment and he said nothing for me. That I was in the place to learn and not to make money. They started treating me somehow and since I was afraid for my life, I left the house last October.

“I slept inside tricycle for months until I met my friend, Vincent, and he introduced me to his friend, Matthew, who helped us in getting his soldier-friend and other boys to pick the man up.

“I never demanded $30,000. I demanded N200,000 ransom. I only mentioned $30,000 so that I’ll know if the man will open up.”

UNILORIN Now Use Obasanjo’s Letter To Buhari As Exam Questions For 100 Level Mass Communication Students

$

Earlier this year, ex president of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo wrote President Muhammadu Buhari an explosive open letter that sparked controversy in the entire nation.

Now the open letter was part of a question to be answered by 100 level Mass Communication students of the University of Ilorin.

See the question below…
In the open letter titled “THE WAY OUT: A CLARION CALL FOR COALITION FOR NIGERIA MOVEMENT,” Obasanjo raised some issues of national importance.

Below are top fifteen things he said in his letter to President Buhari:

1. Obasanjo acknowledged he knew that President Buhari “is weak in the knowledge and understanding of the economy.” He added: “Although, I know that you cannot give what you don’t have and that economy does not obey military order. You have to give it what it takes in the short-, medium- and long-term.”

2. He said President Buhari is weak “in understanding and playing in the foreign affairs sector.”

3. He asked Buhari to stop condoning corruption among some inner caucus of the Presidency. “Culture of condonation and turning blind eye will cover up rather than clean up. And going to justice must be with clean hands,” Obasanjo urged the President.

4. He acknowledged President Buhari’s achievement in the fight against insurgency “although it is not yet uhuru!”

5. He accused the Buhari-led federal government of wittingly or unwittingly allowing the herdsmen/crop farmers’ crisis “to turn sour and messy.” He said: “It is no credit to the Federal Government that the herdsmen rampage continues with careless abandon and without finding an effective solution to it.”

6. He accused some Governors, who endorsed President Buhari for a second term a day after 73 victims (of herdsmen attacks) were being buried in a mass grave in Benue State without condolence, of being insensitive and callous.

7. He said the issue of herdsmen/crop farmers’ dichotomy should not be left on the political platform of blame-game and charged the Federal Government to take the lead in bringing about solution that protects life and properties of herdsmen and crop farmers alike and for them to live amicably in the same community.

8. He also accused President Buhari of “nepotic deployment bordering on clannishness and inability to bring discipline to bear on errant members of his nepotic court,” with special reference to Mainagate.

9. He said President Buhari’s “poor understanding of the dynamics of internal politics” has affected general national security, thus “wittingly or unwittingly making the nation more divided” and widened the inequality gap.

10. He accused the Buhari-led government of buck-passing.

“For instance, blaming the Governor of the Central Bank for devaluation of the Naira by 70% or so and blaming past governments for it, is to say the least, not accepting one’s own responsibility. Let nobody deceive us, economy feeds on politics and because our politics is depressing, our economy is even more depressing today. If things were good, President Buhari would not need to come in. He was voted to fix things that were bad and not engage in the blame game,” he said.

4 Ways Romantic Relationships Can Harm Your Health

So, are serious relationships good or bad thing? Experts don’t deny that stable and happy
partnerships help avoid illnesses, develop useful habits and even prolong life. As for the
relationships with issues, they increase the level of stress and reduce immunity. And have you seen
a problem-free relationship?
Our health is affected by many things, such as behavior or boundaries we set for ourselves and our
partners. There are several factors that affect the state of your body and mind that depend on whether
you’re dating someone or living together.
Excess weight
They say that people forget healthy habits when they realize that they don’t need to look for a new
partner. There’s a deal of truth in that. In 2012, a group of sociologists from the New York CUNY University
sought a correlation between the body mass index of New Yorkers and their marital status. Sociologists
processed 666 questionnaires and concluded that after the wedding, most people gain weight, losing it
after divorce. As long as the spouses are happy, they support each other in the desire to look good, and
sometimes they even go to the gym together. However, when a conflict develops between partners or the
relationship gets complicated for some other reason, this gives the opposite effect. If you notice that your
married friends are gaining weight, be aware that they may have relationship issues.
Problems with sleep
You’d think that the fact that there’s a loved one by your side should positively influence the quality of
sleep. Now imagine that your partner snores or moves uncontrollably while sleeping. In 2005, the American
National Sleep Foundation interviewed more than 1,500 people over the age of 18 to find out how the
sleep patterns of couples, who share one bed, are changing. It turned out that as soon as one of the
partners has problems with sleep, it immediately affects the second one. Sleep disorders are possible even
if you don’t live together, as conflicts and other stressful moments can also interfere with your nightly rest.
Development of the syndrome of chronic anxiety
It's not even about nervous breakdowns, which sometimes become a consequence of problems in
relationships, but about the formation of chronic anxiety. This is a mental disorder associated with the
awareness of the instability of one's own situation. Risks increase if the person isn’t quite sure about the
feelings of the partner. Romantic relationships and fear of losing a loved one contribute to anxiety. The only
exception is a happy marriage. In 2010, on the initiative of the World Health Organization, a survey of
35,000 people from 15 countries was conducted. The results of the survey showed that happily married
people are less prone to anxiety syndrome than those who are in an unstable relationship.
Cultural aspects play a huge role here. For instance, the devotion of Russian brides greatly contributes to
their partners’ anxiety.
Depression
Depression and anxiety often go hand in hand. On the one hand, researchers from the University of Ohio,
who studied the history of the diseases of several hundred people, who suffered from clinical depression,
came to the conclusion that married people are less prone to relapses than singles. On the other hand,

specialists from the J Consult Psych Consultative Center observed 25 women, who fought clinical
depression, for several years and concluded that their condition was aggravated precisely because of the
actions and words of their partners. In women’s case, depression caused by the unworthy behavior of the
partner occurs six times more often than in men. The risk is especially great if the partner cheats or wants
to break up.
