President Muhammadu Buhari’s comments about Nigerian youths being lazy is still causing some ripples around social media.

It will be recalled that the president recently sparked controversy after he berated Nigerian youths for being ‘uneducated’ and ‘not ready to work’.

The President, while speaking during a panel discussion at the Commonwealth business forum in Westminster, London, expressed displeasure with youths in Nigeria because they were dependent on revenue from oil to survive.

After his statement, Nigerians from all walks of life who were really displeased with him, attacked the president on social media.

Chary Boy, known for his activism around Nigeria, has also joined in criticizing the president. This time, he decided to attack the president’s son, Yusuf. He made a post on Twitter insinuating that Yusuf is the real “lazy Nigerian youth”

No going back on restructuring-Gani Adams

Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba Land, Gani Adams, has again emphasized the urgent need to restructure the
country, saying it is the only way that it can survive.
Speaking at a grand reception organised for him by the Ondo State Government, at the weekend in
Akure, the Ondo State capital, the Aare Onakakanfo said Nigeria is going through various crisis today
because some leaders are stubbornly against restructuring.
According to him, if the country is restructured in a way that every locality controls the instrumentality
of security, the wanton killings of innocent Nigerians will stop automatically.
He was also of the opinion that if the country is restructured equitably, the current revenue sharing
formula in which the federal government collects 52.72 percent of centrally collected revenue in the
federation account, leaving state and local governments with 26.72 or 20.60 percent will stop.
Also, no state financial commissioner will be going to Abuja every month to collect pittance in the name
of monthly allocation.

Mace or no mace, Senate, House of Reps can hold plenary–Falana

Constitutional lawyer and human rights activist, Chief Femi Falana, said the National Assembly which
comprises the Senate and House of Representatives have the right to sit for plenary with or without the
symbol of authority, the mace.
According to him, by virtue of Section 54 of the constitution either of the two houses of the National
Assembly is competent to sit and conduct proceedings once a quorum of members is formed.
He said this while reacting to the incident that occurred on Wednesday when a group of hoodlums
invaded the Senate’s hallowed chamber and stole the mace.
Nigerian Pilot recalled that the Senate suspended plenary for a while until a spare mace was brought in.
But in his reaction, yesterday, the senior lawyer said “Since the restoration of democratic rule in Nigeria
in May, 1999, several houses of assembly have been shut down due to the disappearance of the mace
which is believed to be the authority of every legislative house in the country.
“Last Wednesday, the Senate was invaded by five disgruntled young men in a commando-like operation.
During the commando raid, the mace on the central table was snatched and taken away.
“The business of the day could not continue until a replacement was found by the senators. Even though
the stolen mace has since been handed over to the Senate leadership, there have been strident calls for
the prosecution of the invaders.
“Some have even suggested that the suspects be tried for treason. It is curious to know that the
National Assembly has not deemed it fit to enact a law to protect the mace which is so regularly
snatched or stolen by legislators.
“However, while investigation into the embarrassing invasion of the Senate by the police is in progress,
it is pertinent to point out that the mace is not a prerequisite for parliamentary business in Nigeria. In
other words, the proceedings of a legislative house cannot be invalidated because of the absence of a
mace. “By virtue of Section 54 of the constitution either of the two houses of the National Assembly is
‘competent to sit and conduct proceedings’ once the quorum of members is formed.
“Nowhere in the constitution is it expressly or impliedly provided that a mace shall be provided before
the Senate or House of Representatives or any other legislative house can sit and conduct legislative
business,” he said.

Indonesia Jails Former Speaker Of Parliament For 15 Years For Graft

An Indonesian court on Tuesday sentenced a former parliament speaker to 15 years imprisonment for his involvement in a multimillion-dollar corruption case.

Setya Novanto was found guilty of receiving 7.3 million dollars in kickbacks for garnering parliamentary support for a 440-million-dollar government project to issue electronic ID cards.

He was also ordered to pay a fine of 500 million rupiah (36,000 dollars) over the 2011 scheme.

Novanto was then the head of the Golkar party’s parliamentary faction. The ally of President Joko Widodo has denied any wrongdoing.

The seasoned politician was arrested in November by the country’s anti-corruption commission after evading questioning for weeks, claiming ill health.

Prosecutors had sought a 16-year prison sentence for Novanto and demanded that he be barred from holding public office for five years after release.

Novanto had initially ignored summons by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and evaded an arrest attempt in 2018 by disappearing for a day, before being taken to hospital for injuries apparently suffered in a car crash.

Investigators picked him up at the hospital after doctors certified that he was fit for questioning.

KPK said total losses to the state as a result of corruption in the ID card project are estimated at 2.3 trillion rupiah (172 million dollars).
