Full details of ‘Agreement’ between of Buhari and Trump

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that he did not sign any agreements with United States President Donald Trump during his meeting with the US president but only had discussions with him. Nigerian Tribune reports that the president met with his US counterpart at the White House on Monday, April 30, during which they spoke on issues of mutual interest to their two countries.

While answering questions in an interview with the Hausa Service of the Voice of America (VOA) on Tuesday, May 1, Buhari expressed concern about what the America president was told about the killings in the country. Asked if he signed any agreements with his host, he said: “No agreements, just discussions. The first one is the information being given to them that Christians are being killed in Nigeria, but what happened in the Church also happened in the southeast and the North and they just say it is herdsmen that are killing them.

READ  Tension brews as Fulani Herdsmen lay claim to lush Benue Valley

“Those making these allegations against the herdsmen know that herdsmen, as we know them only carry sticks, going about with guns, is a new thing and those making the allegations know that conflict between farmers and herders has a long history even before we were born. “Therefore, it is wrong to say the conflict is between Fulani and Tiv or other tribes like in Taraba. What of Zamfara, where more people were killed than in Taraba and Benue put together? People need to understand that it is mischief that makes people to bring in religion or ethnicity.”

Speaking on the necessity of his visit to the US, the president affirmed that Trump recognized the importance of the war against terrorism that Nigeria was prosecuting and had duly authorized the sale of military equipment to Nigeria. He said: “The US government understands the importance of Nigeria in Africa and the World at large. For instance, during Obama era, we tried to get some jets to help us in the fight against terrorism in the northeast which was declined.

“But as soon as President Trump came into office, he gave the green light and advised us to make funds available. He said the US will sell the jets to us; we had each approached Brazil and the UAE, but they told us that based on the agreement they had with the US, they cannot sell or give anyone these jets until the US agrees; but the US refused at the time until the arrival of Trump who granted our request and gave us price.

The president spoke of additional measures to tackle the security problem in the country, noting that he had directed the police authorities to recruit 6,000 more personnel across all 774 local government areas in the country.

He added: “Measures being taken is to increase the number of police officers and to equip them well. I have asked the Police to recruit 6000 more personnel and that they should recruit across the 774 local government areas in the country instead of going to Motorparks and markets to just pick people anyhow.”

Sen. Uroghide’s attack : Senate vows to its root

0
0

Following the recent attack on Sen. Matthew Uroghide (PDP-Edo) in Benin on April 27, the Senate has mandated its Committee on Police Affairs to investigate and get to the root of the attack.

the senators gave the directives during a Point of Order by Sen. Uroghide at plenary on Wednesday.

While referring to Order 43 of the Senate Standing Order(2015) as amended, the lawmaker decried the humiliation he suffered in the hands of some suspected thugs at Benin Airport over comments he made in plenary.

The lawmaker had on April 26 at plenary, asked the Senate to invoke Section 143 of the 1999 Constitution over alleged illegal withdrawal of 1billion dollars from the Excess Crude Account (ECA).

It also queried the spending of 496million dollars of the money for purchase of Super Tucano Aircraft from the United States of America (USA).

Uroghide while referring to orders 15, 42 and 52 of the Senate Standing Rules, had explained that President Muhammadu Buhari violated sections 80 subsections 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the Constitution regarding withdrawal.

He also said that the president erred by spending monies from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation without appropriation.

Sub Sections 2 and 3 of Section 80 states that, “No money shall be withdrawn from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation except to meet expenditure that is charged upon the fund by this constitution or where the issue of those monies has been authorised by an Appropriation Act, Supplementary Appropriation Act or an Act passed in pursuance of section 81 of this constitution’’ .

Uroghide urged the senate to wade into the matter to ensure that the perpetrators were brought to book.

“For the first time in my life, I was embarrassed, especially for the fact that it stemmed from my responsibility as a senator. Hoodlums were sent to waylay me.

“I stood up to make my contributions as chairman, Public Accounts and the letter transmitted to the senate had to do with funds.

“I mentioned without fear of contradictions that it was a noble idea but that the procedure for the payment was wrong.

“This is because there was no appropriation and that Section 80 of the Constitution provides so and that Schedule 7 puts a burden on us to do the needful.

“I said we should invoke section 143, which provides for investigation and other things.

“For someone to mobilise thugs to humiliate me is unacceptable. A thug removed my cap and threw it away in front of my state Governor and Commissioner of Police.

“Besides, I have privilege to say what I said which was misconstrued,” he said.

Uroghide stressed that if not addressed, such attack could go unabated.

“ I plead with this house that those behind the attack should be fished out and punished to serve as deterrent. Nobody should take us for granted.

“In fact, the State House of Assembly said I should apologise within 72 hours else they will commence the process for my recall,” he said.

In his remarks, the President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, said the spate of molestation of lawmakers in recent times called for concern.

He said it was appalling that lawmakers could be treated with disrespect or harassed over matters addressed in chamber despite the immunity they enjoy.

“There is no colleague here that will not agree that we condemn the act of molestation or harassment.

“The Legislative and Privileges Act, gives us immunity over whatever we say in plenary. It is unfortunate.

“I am happy the Chairman Police Affairs is here. He should make sure that those behind the attack are brought to book,” he said. (NAN)

EFCC arrests fake Magu

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has arrested one Felix Idowu for allegedly impersonating its Acting Chairman, Mr Ibrahim Magu.

In a statement on Wednesday, Spokesman of the commission, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, said the suspect was a real estate agent and graduate of Political Science.

Uwujaren said Idowu was found with documents which had the forged signature of the EFCC boss, and would be charged to court as soon as investigation was concluded.

“Prior to his arrest, the EFCC received intelligence report that the suspect, while posing as operative of the EFCC, requested for money in order ‘to kill’ a petition purportedly written against the complainant.

“The EFCC swung into action by asking the complainant to play along. In the process, Idowu was asked to liaise with the complainant’s personal assistant, who was an EFCC undercover agent.

“While interacting with the undercover agent, the suspect was lured to a popular supermarket in Wuse 2, Abuja, where he was arrested on Monday, April 30.

“Upon search of his Lexus EX 350 car, a lot of documents were recovered including letter of investigation activities on a fake EFCC letter-head paper with ‘Ref No: CTGI/6/vol.1’.

“Also found was a letter of petition written to EFCC with ‘EFCC stamp received’ bearing Magu’s forged signature,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that impersonation of Magu and other officials of the EFCC by fraudsters has been a source of worry to the commission.

The commission has issued several alerts in recent times to warn members of the public against fraudsters using Magu’s name for extortion.

The latest arrest came barely two years after the commission apprehended three suspects for a similar offence on Aug. 9, 2016.

On Sept. 16, 2016, a High Court sitting in Gombe sentenced one Muhammad Adamu to 14 years in prison for posing as an EFCC operative to extort the state’s Muslim Pilgrims’ Welfare Board. (NAN)

The stakeholders spokesman and Chairman of Adamawa APC Reconciliation Committee, Sen. Jonathan Zwingina made the declaration in Yola, while responding to allegation by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Babachir Lawan, who criticised Monday stakeholders meeting in the state for not discussing zoning formula.

Also shedding lights on the zoning, Sen. Binta Masi said that the last congress of the party before the general elections observed the zoning arrangements, which saw her emerging as the first state APC Chairman.
Binta observed that Babachir ought to know that definitely, there was no way such arrangements needed to carry everyone along would be ignored in the coming congresses in the state.
“We are all expected to go to our respective local government areas to meet our people to address the issue,” Binta said.
