Aisha Mohammed Features Black Women as Art Muses

Aisha told CNN why she focuses on black women and darker skinned black women in particular: “I generally do try to centre darker skinned black women as much I can. Black women are so underrepresented in art, and darker skinned black women are even more so. I feel like it’s only right for me to use my privilege and the little bit of visibility I have to put art out there that celebrates all forms of blackness.”

“All my art focuses on Black women and depicting our different forms and experiences in the way I can.” she added.

Iconic American athlete Serena Williams is the beautiful muse in this image.

Aisha Mohammed Features Black Women as Art Muses

Aisha told CNN Africa about the inspiration behind her work : “I just enjoy placing black women in overwhelmingly white spaces in my art. Especially with something like the renaissance which is meant to be seen as this pivotal time in European art history, you never really see anything about the countless black people living in Europe during that time – it was kind of a reminder that black people have always been here, it’s nice to shake the table a little bit sometimes.“

Below are some more of Aisha’s art pieces:

Aisha Mohammed is an incredible artist that must be recognized.

Why Nigerian workers love public holidays

$
0

Nigerians love public holidays because it  afford workers the opportunity to spend time with their families and loved ones of course, for many people, weekends are not enough. In this piece, our correspondent JOY IMISI examines the motive behind the cravings for more public holidays.

According to Wikipedia, a public holiday, national holiday or legal holiday is a holiday generally established by law and is usually a non-working day during the year. In history, public holidays are work-free days set aside to celebrate an event of significance in the history of a nation, a people or the world.

In Nigeria, there exist a lot of public holidays, ranging from religious to national and state holidays which keep people at home, to stay away from work, to spend time with their families and at the same time reflect on the essence of the holiday. For religious holidays like Christmas and Salah, religious faithful are seen performing rites like killing of ram.

The month of August welcomed the celebration of Eid-el-Adha with the religious killing of ram, which is also referred to as Salah. Christians are not left behind as many also celebrate the festival with their Muslims friends.

The slaughtering of rams is the most exciting part on this day, as it is expected of a Muslim home to kill at least a ram on this day.

Eid-el-Adha is the second Muslim holiday as it is commonly known in Nigeria, considering the holiness of the two Muslim holidays; the first of which is the Eid-el-Adha, which comes up at the end of Ramadan every year.

The buying and selling of ram for the celebration cuts across all borders as the Kubwa, Abuja, express road is usually used by sellers to display their rams, which affords buyers the opportunity to buy the animal easier and faster.

However, ram sellers this year bemoaned low patronage at every part of the country. The Muslims on the other hand are also not finding it any easy to do the necessary things connected with the festivities.

Stakeholders, as well as buyers and sellers of the animals used for the Salah festival, have attributed this unfriendly condition to the parlous state of the country’s economy. Other reasons cited include the high exchange rate of the naira and high cost of transportation.

In fact, some had even noted that this year’s ‘ileya’ festival would definitely mark a deviation from what is usually obtained in the history of the country.

Unfortunately, the public holiday seems to have negative effect on the economy than otherwise, as it cripples the economy in many ways. Most businesses and offices are seen locked up as workers stay at home, affording the few available service providers the opportunity of extorting and increasing the price of their services.

In the FCT, most taxi drivers were observed to have increased the price of each drop, as they leveraged on the fact that commuters are at their mercy without any alternative. So most people are forced to pay extra during public holidays.

However, our correspondent spoke with OtokitiKhadijat who noted that the celebration was fun, as the prices of ram were not really hiked.

“The celebration was fun; I’m grateful to God for the opportunity to meet my loved ones and celebrate with them. The importance of Eid-el-Adha cannot be overemphasized. It’s a feast or festival of sacrifice to honour what Prophet Ibrahim did when he wanted to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to Allah. It’s also a celebration of giving to the less privileged, relatives and your family.

Allah recognised his efforts and brought animal to him to slaughter for the sacrifice, instead of his son. Though we have two Eid, we have Eid-Al-Fitri and Eid- Al-Adha. The Eid el Fitri is the celebration after the month of Ramadan, which does not actually call for sacrifice; but the Eid Al Adha, which is the most celebrated amongst the Muslims across the world, is to remember and honour what Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) did.

“This year’s celebration was fun. The price of products in the market was not expensive and even the animals were affordable. So 2018 Eid Al Adha is a day to remember,” she said.

Also, Mrs Funmi Kadiri added that the break gave her some time to rush home to be with her family, adding that since it comes up once in a year, it should be celebrated with family and loved ones.

“I used the holiday to travel home to be with my family, as my extended family is in Lagos. We always embrace the opportunity to meet with our families and loved ones, at the same time rest from the hectic hustle and bustle of a working society.

“In this part of the world we do not go on holidays like they do in other parts of the world. So this break, I must say, came at the right time. I did not really visit the market because I was out of town but from my interaction with my siblings at home, I could deduce that the market prices were quite manageable. Although the price of transportation went up as is usual with most holidays, we were able to have fun, rest and at the same time celebrate the significant Eid- al- Adha,” she said.

In all, Nigerians will continue to appreciate and enjoy public holidays which do not come very often.

I draw my inspiration for jokes from the bible — Stainless

$

0

Comedy is a professional entertainment consisting of jokes with an intention to make an audience laugh. In this interview, stand up comedian, Stainless tells our correspondent JOY IMISI that the business of making people laugh is a very serious one

Give us a brief introduction of yourself

My name is Stainless Ikechukwu Precious Nwaokike, aka Russia Machine, an indigene of Imo State, Omuma in Oru Local Government. I was born in Lagos, grew up in Lagos, had my primary education in Lagos, secondary school in Abuja, and graduated from Imo State; I am a true Nigerian.

I am a standup comedian, master of ceremony, events manager, events consultant and a successful entertainer with 14 years working experience. I was in Russia during the just concluded FIFA World Cup 2018 where I performed at the Russia AMAC night in Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

Why comedy

I will say a part of it came from my father while the other part is my passion. My father was a philanthropist and a very funny man. When we are very small he would make me and my siblings laugh a lot.

As I grew older, during my days in school, I discovered that I love making people around me happy; so I knew that this was what I wanted to do; those who have worked with me can testify.

Tell us about the secret of your success

First and foremost, I am a church boy who knows that without the ogapatapata up there you can do nothing.

I’m one of the oldest, intelligent, influential, well-traveled, strong and successful comedians in Abuja and have performed with all the biggest comedians in Nigeria and outside the shores of Nigeria, yet very humble.

I take my time to read; yes I read a lot and watch the news. Also I do my researches on current happenings. Before I come on stage I study my audience to know what they will like and what they will not like so that I do not commit a blunder on stage, because for every time you stand on stage before an audience, you are creating a market for your next big client.

What inspires your jokes?

I just say my prayers and work with what I see while I’m on stage with some startups jokes to buy the audience attention, but let me add that I draw inspiration for my jokes from the Bible; that is to say I do not come on stage with written or crammed jokes; it will not work.

My church is another place that helps to inspire my jokes because my pastor is funny and highly learned. At the garage, restaurant and as I discuss with friends and families, everything around me works together to give an electrifying and interesting time on stage.

Who are your influencers or role models?

Bigmouth who is now a pastor encouraged and carried me along while I was growing up in the business, Alibaba, Basketmouth, AY and OkeyBakassi.

Your opinion on Abuja entertainment industry

The FCT is a growing market. We are growing with speed and I can say that Abuja is still a virgin land yet on tapped, but we are taking over very soon.

Let me add that our major challenge is that the big companies are yet to endorse Abuja’s finest comedians or entertainers.

Most companies in Abuja are yet to believe in us and support us; but thank God for FIRS and others who have been supporting all our shows; we are hopeful that it will get better and bigger.

Any bad day on stage?

That was years back when I was yet to understudy the industry and the act of making people laugh well. Everyone has a bad day; some persons are weighed down by the economy; some emotional issues; others money wahala and they are not willing to laugh.

In all we have learnt to step on the bad days and move on quickly to the better days ahead.

Message for the upcoming

The place of passion cannot be over emphasized, you must have the Passion and learn from those ahead of you so you don’t commit political, social and religious blunder.

You must be very intelligent; this will keep you confident when standing in front of your audience, do your research if you really have passion for comedy and want to last in the business of making people laugh.

For the new bees, you must maintain the attitude that comedy is an easy job but a very serious business that can be used to educate, teach, correct social vices.

You are a role model and must always act as one, be a responsible citizen wherever you find yourself and ensure that you seek all avenues to make people happy which is the major priority, and then you can make a living from it as it is very lucrative.

Once your time comes and if you work with the right people ahead of you but the ogapatapata of them all is to connect to God for divine provision and protections.

Best food

As an African and a 100 percent Igbo boy, I love beans and plantain, akpu and native soups.

Best colour

Black and white

Philosophy of life

Appear from the way you want to be addressed, my appearance is my name, Stainless.

7 science-based health benefits of drinking enough water

$
0
0

Our bodies are around 60% water, give or take. It is commonly recommended to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day (the 8×8 rule). Although there is little science behind this specific rule, staying hydrated is important.

Here are 7 evidence-based health benefits of drinking plenty of water.

  1. Water Helps to Maximize Physical Performance

If we do not stay hydrated, physical performance can suffer.

This is particularly important during intense exercise or high heat.

Dehydration can have a noticeable effect if you lose as little as 2% of your body’s water content. However, it is not uncommon for athletes to lose up to 6-10% of their water weight via sweat.

This can lead to altered body temperature control, reduced motivation, increased fatigue and make exercise feel much more difficult, both physically and mentally.

Optimal hydration has been shown to prevent this from happening, and may even reduce the oxidative stress that occurs during high intensity exercise. This is not surprising when you consider that muscle is about 80% water.

So, if you exercise intensely and tend to sweat, then staying hydrated can help you perform at your absolute best.

  1. Hydration Has a Major Effect on Energy Levels and Brain Function

Your brain is strongly influenced by hydration status. Studies show that even mild dehydration (1-3% of body weight) can impair many aspects of brain function.

In a study of young women, fluid loss of 1.36% after exercise impaired both mood and concentration, and increased the frequency of headaches.

Another similar study, this time in young men, showed that fluid loss of 1.59% was detrimental to working memory and increased feelings of anxiety and fatigue.

A 1-3% fluid loss equals about 1.5-4.5 lbs (0.5-2 kg) of body weight loss for a 150 lbs (68 kg) person. This can easily occur through normal daily activities, let alone during exercise or high heat.

Many other studies, ranging from children to the elderly, have shown that mild dehydration can impair mood, memory and brain performance.

  1. Drinking Water May Help to Prevent and Treat Headaches

Dehydration can trigger headaches and migraines in some individuals.

Several studies have shown that water can relieve headaches in those who are dehydrated.

However, this appears to depend on the type of headache.

One study of 18 people found that water had no effect on the frequency of headaches, but did reduce the intensity and duration somewhat.

  1. Drinking More Water May Help Relieve Constipation

Constipation is a common problem, characterized by infrequent bowel movements and difficulty passing stool.

Increasing fluid intake is often recommended as a part of the treatment protocol, and there is some evidence to back this up.

Low water consumption appears to be a risk factor for constipation in both young and elderly individuals.

Carbonated water shows particularly promising results for constipation relief, although the reason is not entirely understood.

BOTTOM LINE:

Drinking plenty of water can help prevent and relieve constipation, especially in people who generally do not drink enough water.

  1. Drinking Water May Help Treat Kidney Stones

Urinary stones are painful clumps of mineral crystal that form in the urinary system.

The most common form is kidney stones, which form in the kidneys.

There is limited evidence that water intake can help prevent recurrence in people who have previously gotten kidney stones.

Higher fluid intake increases the volume of urine passing through the kidneys, which dilutes the concentration of minerals, so they are less likely to crystallize and form clumps.

Water may also help prevent the initial formation of stones, but studies are required to confirm this.

BOTTOM LINE:

Increased water intake appears to decrease the risk of kidney stone formation. More research is needed in this area.

  1. Water Helps Prevent Hangovers

A hangover refers to the unpleasant symptoms experienced after drinking alcohol. Alcohol is a diuretic, so it makes you lose more water than you take in. This can lead to dehydration.

Although dehydration is not the main cause of hangovers, it can cause symptoms like thirst, fatigue, headache and dry mouth.

A good way to reduce hangovers is to drink a glass of water between drinks, and to have at least one big glass of water before going to bed.

BOTTOM LINE:

Hangovers are partly caused by dehydration, and drinking water can help reduce some of the main symptoms of hangovers.

  1. Drinking More Water Can Help With Weight Loss

Drinking plenty of water can help you lose weight.

This is due to the fact that water can increase satiety and boost your metabolic rate.

In two studies, drinking half a liter (17 ounces) of water was shown to increase metabolism by 24-30 percent for up to 1.5 hours.

This means that drinking 2 liters of water every day can increase your total energy expenditure by up to 96 calories per day.

The timing is important too, and drinking water half an hour before meals is the most effective. It can make you feel fuller, so that you eat fewer calories.

In one study, dieters who drank half a liter of water before meals lost 44 percent more weight, over a period of 12 weeks .

It is actually best to drink water cold, because then the body will use additional energy (calories) to heat the water to body temperature.

Dealing with Catarrh

$
0
0

Catarrh is a very common problem in the world, occurring in both children and adults.

During the cold and raining season it becomes more rampant due to the weather conditions associated with it.

The cause of catarrh include cold, fever and allergies.

Catarrh can be described as a build up of mucus in the airwaves. It is accompanied by symptoms of headache, cold, runny nose, low sense of smell, blocked throat and persistent cough.

Although Catarrh is not classified as a serious illness it can last for months in few cases.

Few steps that can be taken to get rid of Catarrh include:

  • Staying hydrated: it’s important to always stay hydrated due to the dry throat associated with it.
  • Warm water: taking of warm water is encouraged as it helps in giving relief. A bottle of warm water should always come in handy when fighting catarrh.
  • Avoid dry places: places with extreme temperature should be avoided. Like places that have air-conditioning.
  • Using nasal rune or spray: nasal spray can be gotten in a pharmacy or drug store. While a rinse can be made at home by using a tea spoon of salt on boiled water. Wait after few minutes to allow it cool then inhale the heat severally to gain relief. Some use palm or hot balm (aboniki) as alternative (though, this should be done with care. As it’s harsh).
  • Avoiding things that cause the catarrh can be useful. If you know things that you are allergic to like smoke. Then it can be controlled.
  • Try oil-pulling with coconut oil: according to wiki-how, Oil-pulling is one of the best ways to get rid of catarrh. To do oil-pulling, put about a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth and swish it around for about 10 to 15 minutes. Then, spit out the oil. Repeat this once daily.
  • Visiting a pharmacy: drug prescriptions can be used to curtail it.

Severe catarrh can last over a year, although the cause of this is not known. It is believed that it’s not caused by allergies. Specialists believe it is as a result of abnormalities in the flow of mucus in the nose cavity.

To avoid re-occurrence few steps can be taken

  • Avoid anything that triggers symptoms. Catarrh, especially when caused by allergies, may be triggered by environmental hazards. Try to minimize your exposure to anything that tends to trigger outbursts.

If you have any allergens you know of, such as pollen, minimize your exposure to them throughout the day.

Smoky places tend to trigger catarrh, so stay away from areas prone to smoke.

  • Humidify the air in your home. Dry air can make you more prone to catarrh. Buy a humidifier to moisten the air in your home. This can help prevent you from developing catarrh again. Humidifier adds moisture to the air to prevent dryness
  • Avoid air conditioning and heaters. Air conditioners and heaters tend to dry out air. This can make catarrh worse or trigger it again after it passes. Try to stay away from such environments.

Collabo: Romance between Nigerian and American Artistes

Music has been ascribed to be a very powerful tool which from the existence of man has been used for different reasons and purposes. Starting from the biblical times, music was said to be used as a healing tool for those possessed by evil spirits; a good example being that of King Saul. It was used for glorification and deceptive purposes, which is usually ascribed to the bringing down of God’s spirit and the fall of Satan.

In Africa, music is used for purification, for announcements, for ceremonies, telling stories and for educational purposes. With the effects and uses of music, many individuals have taken it to be a career and source of living. In the past, most people who engaged in this were referred to as talking drums, high life singers, palm wine singers, etc., but with the emergence of the media, singing has been recognised as a means of employment.

In Nigeria, the world of music has evolved with time, starting from the time of Fela, Shina Peters, Ebenezer Obi, Sunny Ade, SalawaAbeni amongst others down to the time of Wizkid, Davido, Tiwa Savage, YemiAlade etc., the evolution included musical styles, fashion, video, beats and instruments.

The rise of music in Nigeria was categorised with high life, waka, juju, yo-pop and Fuji singers till the 70’s when the afro pop emerged.

Afro pop music, which is African popular music, is mostly described as a fusion of various musical genres into one. It is mostly associated with Nigeria but also found in other parts of the world, mostly West Africa but including Europe.

With the rise in fame of Afro pop in Nigeria, the western world has begun gaining interest in Nigerian artistes, incorporating them in their music and copying their styles. No wonder global audit firm, Pricewater House, in a 2014 article said “Nigeria is one of the most vibrant markets in sub-Saharan Africa. The power of the mobile device as a communications enabler is transforming the continent, and with this transformation in communications, the potential for Nigerian consumers to access entertainment and media in new ways is significant. Total entertainment and media expenditure in Nigeria will exceed US$9 billion in 2017, representing a 23.7 percent CAGR between 2013 and 2017.”

Major success that attracted foreign interest in Nigerian music in this present generation could be said to have started in 2004 with ‘African Queen’ by Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2face, which gave him international recognition and numerous awards. The song is said to be amongst the greatest hits in Africa.

From 2004, major collaborations between Nigerian and international artistes have begun emerging. Ranging from ‘Proud to be African’ by Wyclef featuring 2face, down till Ciara featuring Tekno. Nigerian music could be said to have evolved a whole lot as Nigerian artistes hold sold out concerts all over the world with audiences being both Nigerians and non-Nigerians.

Major collaborations include ‘Beautiful Onyinye’ by Psquare featuring Rick Ross, Tiwa Savage featuring Omarion ‘Get it Now,’ ‘One Dance’ by Drake featuring Wizkid, amongst others.

Aside collaborations, some songs by Nigerian singers have recorded international success, topping major charts around the world. Examples include Dbanj’s ‘Oliver Twist’ which charted at number two on the UK R&B charts. It had two nominations at the world music awards.

Another song which was a major hit was ‘God Win’ by Korede Bello. The inspirational and gospel song was said to be on the top 50 on the apple music. At the release of its video, it was said to be one of the fastest video download approximating almost one million download in one hour. The song won 2016 Nigerian music video awards and the Headies award in 2015.

Major Nigerian awards are the Headies’, NEA and CPEA . Other minor awards exist in Nigeria of which there are those for teens. Though Nigerian music has not gotten to a place of relaxation like that of the western world it could be proudly said we have grown from where we used to be.

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus has over the weekend described Governor Seriake Dickson as the best Governor in Nigeria. He also hailed the tireless efforts of Governor Dickson at ensuring that the PDP remains cohesive and stable not only in his state, but also at the national level.

A press statement signed by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary Francis Ottah Agbo noted that, Secondus gave the commendation when he led members of the PDP National Working Committee and the Board of Trustees to Toru-Orua in Bayelsa State to commiserate with Governor Dickson and his Family over the demise of his 72 year old mother, Mrs. Goldcoast Dickson popularly called Mama Gogo.

Secondus said Governor Dickson has over the years helped to build a strong PDP into a global brand and has continued to support the party. As Chairman of the PDP National Reconciliation Committee, the PDP Chief said the Governor helped to restore peace and unity to the party at all levels.

Condoling with Governor Dickson on behalf of the National Working Committee over the passage of his mother, Prince Secondus, described the death of Mrs. Dickson as shocking.

The PDP National Chairman who said Mama Go-go was the Governor’s back bone assured that PDP will both physically and spiritually participate in giving Mrs. Dickson a befitting burial.

His words: “Mrs Dickson was a powerful praying mother, no wonder you are so successful in your political career. She was on her knees praying and blessing you everyday. She was a great and unassuming community leader whose services to mankind has endeared her to many.

Responding, Governor Seriake Dickson expressed appreciation to members of the PDP National Working Committee for identifying with him and the Dickson family in their moment of grief, noting that his mother was also a staunch member of the PDP.

Governor Dickson used the occasion to inform them of his intention to immortalize his mother’s legacies of love and compassion by instituting the Mrs. Goldcoast Dickson Memorial Cancer Screening Centre.

According to the Governor, the project is a private initiative aimed at stemming the rising cases of cancer, which has been silently destroying lives.

“This is part of my own crusade to kick out cancer. At the appropriate time, I will reach out to people of goodwill to support the initiative and possibly save the next life.”

These are the times we are confronted by our mortality and limitations. My family and I take solace in your visit and we feel honoured. Its a tough period for us. The loss of a mother is not what one should wish anybody. She lived a life of love, care and compassion.”

In his brief comments. National Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Senator Walid Jibrin, prayed God to grant the Dickson’s family and the community the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

Members of the South-South Zonal Executive of the PDP led by its Chairman, Chief Emmanuel Ogidi, the Bayelsa State Local Government Caretaker Committee Chairmen as well as the state leadership of the Civil Service also offered their condolences to the Governor.

American Sen. John McCain has chosen to discontinue medical treatment for brain cancer, his family said, according to a report by Associated Press.

In a statement, McCain’s family said McCain has surpassed expectations for his survival, but “the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict.”

The family added: “With his usual strength of will, he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment.”

The 81-year-old McCain is in his sixth term representing Arizona. He has been away from the Capitol since December.

Even though a Republican, he has been one of the trenchant critics of President Trump.

Family members say they are immensely grateful for the support and kindness shown by McCain’s caregivers and for the outpouring of concern and affection by thousands of people.

In a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja, the NANS President, Comr. Danielson Akpan, said the order for the protest was out of order since it did not emanate from the Association but from a ‘misguided imposter’.

“The attention of the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Comr. Danielson Bamidele Akpan, has been drawn to a planned “mass action” slated for the 27th – 31st August 2018, through a letter titled “NOTICE OF MASS ACTION IN FCT ENVIRONS FROM 27-31 AUGUST”, addressed to His Excellency, President Mohammadu Buhari by a certain Comr. Bamigbade Taiwo, a self-acclaimed National Vice President (External Affairs).

“I wish to use this medium to clearly and categorically inform His Excellency, President Mohammadu Buhari and the general public that neither the letter nor the planned mass action emanated from the association as the writer is an impostor of one of the executive offices of NANS which elections has been slated in the coming emergency senate sitting to be held in September.”

The NANS President, has however ordered the suspension of the mass action, thus calling on the students of National Open University of Nigeria to disregard and stay away from the planned protest.

He reassured the students of the Association’s commitment to swiftly engage the management of National Open University of Nigeria, National Youth Service Corps, Council of Legal Education, relevant stakeholders and government agencies to ensure the resolution of their various grievances.

“The planned mass action is suspended forthwith and will only be considered when every channel and avenue for peaceful resolution and consultation is exhausted.

Buhari to Military: Be ruthless in fighting bandits, Nigerians deserve peace

President Muhammadu Buhari has challenged military personnel deployed to Katsina State, saddled with the task of fighting bandits in Zamfara, to be `as ruthless as humanly possible’ in carrying out their assignment.

The president gave the challenge when he addressed the 1000-strong military force assembled to check the menace of the bandits and other criminal elements at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport Katsina, on Saturday.

The Federal Government had, on July 29, assembled military personnel, comprising the army, air force, police and the civil defence to help in tackling the activities of the bandits.

Nigerian Pilot reports that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has deployed fighter aircraft to Katsina, the airport with the closest proximity to Zamfara, to allow for immediate and effective response to the menace of the bandits.

The president had also authorised the engagement by NAF, of advanced satellite surveillance technology to help in accurate detection of movement and locations of the bandits.

The bandits had been terrorising innocent rural dwellers, razing down several villages and towns across the local government areas of Zamfara, and also kidnapping for ransom.

President Buhari, who expressed satisfaction with the way and manner the soldiers were carrying out their assignment, said that Nigerians deserved some peace.

‘‘Nigerians are looking up to you and us to secure the country. What is happening in the areas of operations is disgraceful.

“I’m very pleased with the way officers and men are firmly putting it down and I want you to be as ruthless as humanly possible. Nigerians deserve some peace.

“When we came into government, what we promised was security. The country has to be secured to be managed.

“Secondly, on economy, more than 60 per cent of the population of Nigeria is under 30 years.

‘‘A lot of them did not have the opportunity to be educated to secure respective jobs; their expectations are very high.

“The second undertaken we made is to improve the economy and the third is to fight corruption.

‘‘We have been doing our best and we depend a lot on you to do what is needed in the field.

“I do not want you to spare any cattle rustler, armed robber or any bad element who thinks he is above the law.

‘‘I commend you for the job you have been doing so far and I assure you that I will continue to be a worthy Commander-in-Chief,’’ he said.

The president, who donated five bulls to the military personnel, departed for Abuja after the Sallah break in his country home, Daura.

Gov. Aminu Masari of Katsina State and other government dignitaries were at the airport to wish the president safe trip back to Abuja.

While in Daura, the president had received seven APC governors, many members of the National Assembly including Sen. Shehu Sani as well as cabinet ministers, who paid him Sallah homage.

President Buhari also used the opportunity to hold various family meetings with relatives.(NAN)

A UK based woman Augustina Osaigbevo accused by the Lagos State Police Command of sponsoring assassins to kill her aunt Madam Gladys Osaigbevo-Omon, said she was framed up.

Augustina made the denial in a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris. The petition was dated Aug. 17, 2018.

She said all the allegations against her were false and and concocted by her accusers.

She urged the IGP to investigate the case, with a view to identifying those involved.

Nigerian Pilot recalled that, on Aug. 6, 2018, the commissioner of police in Lagos State, CP Imohimi Edgal paraded two men, Osaro Okonoboh and Lucky Oboh who were arrested over the alleged attempt to assassinate Madam Gladys Osaigbevo-Omon.

Edgal alleged during the press briefing that Augustina hired the two men for N4.5 million, and paid N500,000 in advance to carry out the assassination in Benin City, Edo.

NAN further reports that the two suspects told newsmen they were hired by Augustina.

However, Augustina denied sending anyone to assassinate Madam Gladys. She said her petition to the I-G is meant to clear her name.

“I am making this complaint with deep wounds in my heart, therefore, asking the I-G for a comprehensive investigation, so that my reputation and integrity severally tarnished by the police in Lagos can be restored by your office”, she wrote in the petition.

“Nigerians abroad have heard of superb and breathtaking investigations and intelligence gathering techniques your Tactical Response Team and world acclaimed achievements by the I-G Intelligence response Team, which has(sic) placed Nigeria in the league of high(sic) respected countries.

“Sadly, the conduct of officers in Lagos command in this matter, fall(sic) short of the standard your office has set in the area of intelligence gathering and investigation,” she said.

Augustina demanded evidence of the financial transactions between her and the suspects or any other person.

She questioned the economic benefit she would enjoy raising N4.5million, a third of her annual income as a social worker in UK, to kill her aunt.

Augustina also denied having any contact with the Nigeria Police on the matter, stressing that since the press briefing, no police in UK or Nigeria had contacted her . She accused the Lagos Police Command of bias .

She also denied the allegation of human trafficking in UK and using her nephew Mary for prostitution. She claimed she helped Mary to UK to do hair dressing job. But she was arrested by UK Police and placed for deportation.

Augustina claimed to have received many embarrassing calls from friends and relatives over the matter.

She asked the I-G to set up a team to carry out a comprehensive investigation and how the police in Lagos got involved.

She said the probe team should find out the roles played by every individual, including the police in Lagos and secure evidence of financial transactions between her and the arrested suspects.

“I request that the report of investigation into this case be made public. I demand for a public apology from Lagos State Police Commissioner, CP Imohimi Edgal for his unprofessional conduct, public disgrace and humiliation he brought to my person and credibility.

“I know that the I-G who is known as a thoroughbred and seasoned police officer, will do justice to my petition and not encourage any cover-up, “ Augustina said.

The police spokesman in Lagos, CSP Chike Oti told NAN that the suspects had been charged to court. He also said Augustina is wanted by the command and asked her to submit to police for investigation.

“The CP only briefed the press based on the complaint the command received”, Oti said. (NAN)

Vice chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Sulyman Age Abdulkareem has said that his riches were there before he joined the service of the University of Ilorin as lecturer.
Professor Abdulkareem said this as a rebuttal of reports in the social media about how he made his fortunes after being employed as a lecturer in the institution.

He made the clarification in Ilorin while receiving in audience the executive committee of the Kwara State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, led by its chairman, Mallam Umar Abdulwahab.

He told the visiting team that he was in the United States for 22 years and Saudi Arabia for two years where he worked comfortably before relocating to Nigeria.

Abdulkareem, who stressed the importance of information in human society, however regretted that social media platforms were being used to propagate falsehood.
The Unilorin VC stated that it would be difficult to checkmate social media reports because the platforms had made everybody journalist, even while many of them did not have requisite professional training.

“Your profession is a noble one;it is one of the oldest in the world. As you know, information plays crucial role in human society. If not for the opportunity to be informed from time to time, we would have been in the dark.
“I want to say that as important as information is, the problem we have these days is that we have social media that makes everybody to be journalists, there is nothing we can do about it.
“Contrary to what was reported about me, I joined University of Ilorin probably as one of the very rich lecturers. I was in the US for 22 years, Saudi Arabia for 2years and there I was more comfortable,”Abdulkareemtold the journalists.
He thanked the state council of NUJ for choosing him as a patron, assuring that the institution under his administration would do its best to partner with the union.
The state chairman of NUJ, Abdulwahab had earlier congratulated Abdulkareem on his appointment as the Unilorin helmsman and commended him for elevating MrKunleAkogun as substantive director, Corporate Affairs Directorate of the university.

He said the union under his leadership was prioritising safety of members against impunity, intimidation and harassment, pointing out that many members of the union had suffered one attack or the other.
Before theirvisit to the vice chancellor, Abdulwahab in company of other members of the executive inaugurated the new executives of the Unilorin FM Chapel.

Army blows hot, set to take action over soldiers who blocked Maiduguri Airport

The Nigerian Army said today that it will punish some soldiers who blocked Maiduguri Airport over suspicions that they were going to be deployed to the battle front against Boko Haram.

Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. General A.M. Dikko made it crystal clear that they would be disciplined in accordance with military laws.

“We don’t punish in the military. We discipline. Discipline is the bedrock of the job. If there’s no discipline, then we can’t have an army. So if a soldier errs, he must be corrected”, Dikko said at an event in Maiduguri today.

Two weeks ago, riotous troops, who claimed they had overstayed in Borno state blocked the airport for at least two hours, to resist fresh deployment to Boko Haram fronts.

The Nigerian Army later described them as ‘unscrupulous”.

Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu, Deputy Director Public Relations, Operation Lafiya Dole Theatre Command said the protest by the few unscrupulous troops happened while the command was conducting a redeployment of soldiers at the Maiduguri Airport, following a directive to review troops’ deployment in Maiduguri metropolis, to reinvigorate the security architecture of the city.

“The redeployment became expedient after a recent assessment of the security situation by the Theatre Command. Regrettably however, a few of the troops who had misunderstood the development and erroneously assumed it was going to negatively affect their rotation from the theatre of operation became agitated and reacted by firing into the air.”

Maj. General Dikko, spoke on the issue today and said disciplinary actions would be taken against them.

Dikko said the military will not condone any act of mutiny by soldiers fighting Boko Haram.

He condemned the act of mutiny under any guise, maintaining that the law and ethics which the Nigerian Army is guided by would take its full course on errant soldiers.

Dikko reminded them of their oath of recruitment pointing out that they voluntarily joined the military and as such must be disciplined.

“You have decided to put your life on the line for the territorial integrity of Nigeria. So it is very important that we are reminded of our roles and responsibilities to the nation and our responsibility to the society, most importantly our responsibility to ourselves because we are not a conscript army. We are a regular military.

“Those who have volunteered to serve and that is the only time you will volunteer, subsequently having offered your service, it is the responsibility of the services to deploy you where they find you appropriate.

“So it is important that we continue to retain our professional comportment so that we can serve diligently. It’s important that we uphold the values and ethics of the system that we belong to,”said Dikko.

“It is also important that we understand it is a service to our fatherland. It is not a service to ourselves.

“The bedrock of your service as a soldier is discipline. A soldier must remain disciplined at all times. A soldier must obey instructions”.

It was a very painful and teary event at the Saints Simon and Jude Seminary Kuje, when late Rev. Fr. Michael Akawu, shot dead by armed robbers in Gwagwalada, was laid to rest.

The Catholic Bishop of Abuja, Most Revd. John Cardinal Onayeikan, many catholic priests, family members, relatives and other faithfuls, could not hold back their tears as Rev. Akawu, the first indigenous priest was buried.

The priest who was just 18 months in priesthood, was until his death the Assistant Parish Priest at Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Parish Dobi.

On Thursday, Late Rev. Akawu’s body left University Teaching Hospital Gwagwalada for Immaculate Conception Parish Dobi for a Mass, from where it departed to Our Lady Queen of Nigeria Pro-Cathedral Garki for three different masses of the Wake.

On Friday August 24, the Funeral Mass was also held at OLQN Pro- Cathedral from where it proceeded to the Priests Burial Ground at the Ss Simon and Jude Minor Seminary Kuje for internment.

The Parish Priest at Dobi, Rev. Fr. Paul Oziabor Salami, told our correspondent who is a personal friend, that the death of the young priest has left the whole parish devastated.

Fr. Salami who was visibly broken said that the death of his colleague and friend cut so deeply as he prayed God to bring the perpetrators of the dastardly act to book.

Rev. Fr Michael Akawu was Saturday evening shot dead by yet to be identified gun men in Gwagwalada, Abuja.

The Catholic Priest, who until his gruesome killing worked as Assistant Parish Priest at Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Parish Dobi, was allegedly gunned down at a Supermarket in Gwagwalada where he was said to have gone shopping.

Earlier in the week, while reacting to the death of Fr. Akawu, Director of Social Communication in the Archdiocese, Fr. Patrick Alumuku, described Akawu’s demise as a blow below the belt to the growth of the local church in Abuja.

“It is a very sad moment for us because Fr. Akawu was a sign of the growing local church in the FCT. He was the first indigenous priest of the local tribe here in the nation’s capital,” he said.

He ruled out the possibility of a targeted attack on the slain priest, saying: “The church was made to understand that Fr. Akawu was not the only individual that was killed by the gunmen.”
