APC primaries: Group pays N45m for Buhari’s nomination form

Barely 24 hours after the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, a group operating under the aegis of National Coordinator of Nigeria Consolidation Ambassador Network, NCAN, has paid a whooping sum of N45 million to purchase nomination form for President Muhammadu Buhari to actualize his ambition of ruling beyond 2019.

Presenting a cheque for that amount to the national chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole at the party secretary, the coordinator of the group, Sanusi Musa said the decision to buy the form was informed by the need to consolidate on the foundation for a better Nigeria.

According to him, the group was on the front line calling on the president to seek re-election.

“We cannot afford to go back to Egypt. We cannot afford to destroy the future of our children,” the coordinator explained.

“The foundation laid by President Muhammadu Buhari must be reinforced. We believe in the leadership of President Buhari, we count on him to consolidate the good work he has started for another four more years.

“It is for this reason Mr. Chairman, we have decided to pull our meagre resources together and purchase the expression of interest and nomination forms for President Buhari as he presents himself to our party members to be chosen as its candidate for the 2019 general election.

“Our members from various villages, local governments and states have contributed to making this happen.

“We have no doubt that Mr. President has both in action and word being working lay a foundation for greater and prosperous nation that our generation and future generation will be proud of. Under his administration Nigeria has become a country sought after for investment in the world. Nigeria has assumed its leadership role in not just Africa but the world”, Musa added.

No restructuring without equitable wealth sharing – Falana

Constitutional lawyer Chief Femi Falana (SAN) yesterday said that any restructuring of the country can only be meaningful if wealth is equitably distributed.

To him, merely restructuring Nigeria will not guarantee unity and political stability without the redistribution of wealth.

Falana was of the view that while the country needs power devolution, only the democratisation of powers and equitable redistribution of the commonwealth along egalitarian lines would engender unity.

In a paper delivered at the 19th Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture , the Senior Advocate said since the rich were united in exploiting the country’s national resources, the exploited poor and oppressed should unite to free themselves from poverty.

Falana said: “A leading People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has become one of the leading proponents of restructuring, but his support for restructuring has not addressed the crucial issue of the redistribution of the national wealth.

“After all, in his capacity as the nation’s Vice President and chairman of the National Council on Privatisation, Alhaji Abubakar presided over the restructuring of the nation’s economy through the liquidation of public assets and the privatisation of the commanding height of the economy.

“The policy led to a situation whereby all major public enterprises and assets including oil blocks were sold to the so called ‘core investors’.

“Such official transfer of the commonwealth to a few local and foreign corporate bodies will have to be reversed in the interests of the people.”

According to Falana, the nation cannot be seriously restructured without equitable redistribution of wealth.

“Therefore, those who have cornered the commonwealth should not be allowed to talk of restructuring in vacuo.

“In other words, the campaign for restructuring should encompass the decentralisation and democratisation of political and economic powers which have been privatised by all factions of the ruling class,” he said.

The leading rights activist referred to the constitutional provision that the welfare and security of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.

He said Nigerians must therefore demand an end to a policy that allows political office holders and civil servants who constitute less than one per cent of the population to continue to allocate 70 per cent of the nation’s resources to themselves.

Falana said: “If the Federal Government could withdraw US$12.4 billion from the foreign reserves to pay questionable external debts and subsidise the local bourgeoisie with intervention funds running to trillions of naira, it cannot turn round to complain of lack of fund to fix collapsed social infrastructures, education, health, transportation and agriculture and create jobs for our army of unemployed youths.

“The recovery of the stolen wealth of the nation from foreign and local thieves should be a collective battle while the fund recovered from corrupt public officers and their privies is spent on job creation and fixing of hospitals and schools as well as the provision of other social services.”

The senior lawyer believes that the programmes and manifestoes of the ruling party and the mainstream opposition parties cannot take Nigeria to the Promised Land.

Nigerians, he said, must take their destiny in their own hands by organising themselves to demand for the actualisation of the fundamental objectives and directive principles set out in Chapter two of the Constitution.

“The economy cannot be transformed in favour of Nigeria on the basis of the dangerous prescriptions of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

“Nigerians should, therefore, be prepared to challenge the recycled neo-liberal managers of the economy who continue to insist on the dominance of market forces which have been discredited by the crisis of global capitalism.

“While religious leaders are entitled to prepare the country for heaven, they must team up with patriotic forces to organise, empower and mobilise our people through their unions, associations, collectives and religious groups to rebuild the country on the platform of social justice and equity. Otherwise, the unity of Nigeria will remain a mirage.” he declared.

An Abuja High Court 14 presided over by Hon. Justice A. O. Musa on Tuesday, September 4, granted an Order of Perpetual Injunction restraining, the All Progressives Congress, APC, from tampering with the outcome of its congresses.

According to the press statement from the office it’s Publicity Secretary, Chris Finebone, and made available to newsmen, the injunction barred the National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole (1st and 2nd Defendants) from ‘tampering with the mandates of the elected Officials/Delegates elected at the 1stDefendant’s Ward, Local Government and State Congresses in Rivers State on May 19, 20 and 21, 2018 respectively, either by nullifying, removing, or in any way, refusing to give effect to the outcome of the said congresses, or by purporting to conduct another Congress in respect of Rivers State.”

The Court also affirmed the validity of the congresses which took place May 19, 20 and 21 and subsequently culminated in the election of Hon. Ojukaye Flag-Amachree’s State Executive Committee with such congresses having been conducted in compliance with the constitution of the APC (1st Defendant). It therefore ordered that both 1st and 2nd Defendants (APC and its National Chairman) are bound to give effect to the outcome of the said congresses.

It would be recalled that following the controversy generated by the Ward, Local Government and State Congresses of the APC in Rivers State, the State Chairman of the Party, Hon. Ojukaye Flag-Amachree and his Exco approached the Abuja High Court, to seek injunction against the APC, its National Chairman, NWC/NEC from tampering with the Rivers State Exco of the Party, until all pending matters regarding the congresses are resolved.

It could also be recalled that 23 members of the party had approached a Port Harcourt High court to challenge the congresses, on the grounds that though they bought the party’s nomination form, were not allowed to present themselves for it.

Opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Wednesday confirmed that it is concluding discussions with more state governors and members of the National Assembly elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, ahead of their decampment to the PDP.

PDP national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan said the party has already concluded discussions with six APC governors and 27 APC members in the National Assembly, who have also drawn their consultations and secured the mandates of their constituents to move to the PDP ahead of the 2019 general election.

“Yes,the PDP verifies that discussions on control of party structures in the affected states and senatorial zones have also reached advanced stage and would be completed in a couple of weeks after which the governors and lawmakers will announce their defection to the PDP.

Ologbondiyan explained that in line with decisions reached at the discussions, the members of the National Assembly decamping to the PDP will cross-carpet at the reconvening of session in the two chambers, which will increase the PDP majority in both chambers.

“The party assures that all grey areas of the agreement, including issues of waivers and accommodation for participation in primaries, are being smoothened out by the Governot Liyel Imoke-led PDP Contact and Integration Committee, which has been galvanizing our alliances among stakeholders across other parties, including those from the APC.”

The PDP also commends the spirit of tolerance, dialogue, accommodation and oneness of purpose that pervade the alliance among members.

The party expressed its readiness to take back control of power at the center, as well as in their traditional states of Plateau, Niger, Adamawa, Kano, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Katsina, Kogi, Jigawa, Zamfara, Imo, Edo as well as southwest states of Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos states.

The party charged all its members and supporters to remain steadfast and wary of the gimmicks of the deflated APC, which has resorted to sponsoring spurious publications filled with deceptions, fabrications and lies against our party.

The party also commends Nigerians across board for their overwhelming support and solidarity with the repositioned PDP as expressed in the unprecedented interest in our tickets for various elective positions, particularly the presidency, governorship and National Assembly positions, in addition to spirited public discourse at all levels of political engagements across our country.

“These interests and movements from the APC to the PDP are indicators of the consensus by Nigerians to rally on the platform of the PDP to end the economic hardship, bloodletting, violence and infrastructural decay that have become the hallmark of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration, and return our nation to the path of unity, national cohesion and economic prosperity, which the PDP is known for.”

Presidency warns Atiku over comment on Buhari

*Says President won’t compromise on corruption

*Agrees Buhari is single-minded but only in effecting change in Nigeria

*Cautions Fmr VP against using Buhari’s name to buoy his ambition

Following Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar’s comment that President Muhammadu Buhari is “very uncompromising, power drunk and will not be willing to leave power without a fight” the presidency has cautioned him to “mind his language” while making any comment on Mr. President.

In a statement yesterday, the Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina said rather than use the name of President Buhari to buoy his bid to get the presidential ticket of a party, whose flag has been flying at half-mast since it got roundly trounced at the polls in 2015, the former Vice President needs be told that the President is truly uncompromising, but only when it comes to looting the common patrimony of Nigerians, and squandering their riches.

He said President Buhari can also be said to be uncompromising in his quest to restore probity and accountability to public office and he is uncompromising in cleaning the rot Nigeria was consigned into pre-2015, thus the war against corruption is being fought without fear or favour.

“The President is equally resolute in the determination to ensure that Nigeria is no longer a mono-economy, depending only on oil”, Adesina stressed.

Speaking further, the Presidential spokesman said “Yes, President Buhari is single-minded in effecting change in every area of Nigerian life. So, Alhaji Abubakar is right, if that was what he meant by the President being “uncompromising.”

“But power drunk? No! And being a man “who will not be ready to leave power without a fight?” Never! Not President Buhari who has demonstrated in many ways that he is a committed democrat, though also a retired military general. He has no apologies about that. Through a sterling military career, he served Nigeria with his heart and might, before venturing into partisan politics.

“In many ways, President Buhari has wielded power with decency, and as a means of serving the people, rather than for personal ends. If there’s one person not intoxicated by power, it is President Buhari, and scores of millions of Nigerians know this. That is why they will invest him with power again next year, knowing that he won’t misuse or misapply what has been entrusted to him”, he stated.

Adesina advised that Atiku Abubakar may want to borrow a leaf from the decorous language employed by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo in answering his recent press statement on the restructuring debate because according to him, that is the hallmark of statesmen and not crying wolf where none exists, which is what the allegation of being uncompromising and power drunk truly is.

“President Buhari is actuated by service to country, and nothing else. So, there couldn’t be anything like “not ready to leave power without a fight.

“Indeed, the insinuation of a fight is the mindset of a man who is either undemocratic or has seen defeat staring him and his party in the face.

“Let the former Vice President be rest assured that there will be no ‘fight’ over power in Nigeria. Not under President Buhari’s watch. The people don’t want a fight. It is some political leaders we must beseech to eschew pugnacity, and mind their language”, he added.
