Jonathan congratulates first African ICAO president, urges commitment to duty

resident Goodluck Jonathan has urged the President-elect of the International Civil Aviation Organisation, ICAO, Dr Bernard Aliu to discharge his duty with all sense of commitment while also congratulating him for being the first African President of the organisation since its establishment in 1944.

President Jonathan, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Sen. Anyim Pius Anyim, said that Aliu’s election was made possible because of his wealth of experiences and knowledge in the sector.

“It is worthy to mention that election of Dr Bernard Aliu as ICAO’s council President was also made possible by his technical experience and knowledge in global aviation industry. His works in ICAO over the years has been exemplary,” he said.

He assured that Nigeria will continue to support the organisation in promoting air safety and commended the outgoing ICAO president Mr Roberto Gonzalez for his services in the organisation.

Aliu’s tenure commences on January 1, 2014 through to December 31, 2016

The Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah in her remark said that Dr Aliu while serving as Nigerian representative in ICAO council “distinguished himself with exemplary performance, contributing to sustainable development of civil aviation globally.”

While commending him for the achievement, she said that Nigeria shares ICAO’s vision of promoting safety, security, environmental protection, comfort and sustainability of civil aviation globally.

“Nigeria also recognises that the aviation sector plays a pivotal role in the economic development of a nation,” she added.

“Aviation is very important for the economy. Aviation contributes 8 percent of global GDP,” said the outgoing President of the ICAO council Mr Roberto Gonzalez while commending Nigeria for her achievements in the sector.

In his speech, Aliu promised to put in his best towards uplifting the global aviation industry. He noted that his election into the office is a manifestation that Nigeria has great professionals. “I will do everything to keep Nigerian flag flying,” he added.

Aliu holds M.sc Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the Kiev Institute of Civil Aviation Engineers, Ukraine. He obtained a PhD in Technical Sciences (Aeronautics) also in Kiev.

Aliu who led the development of the African Civil Aviation Policy, AFCAP under the auspices of the African Union Commission is a recipient of several awards including the African Airlines Association, AFRAA Individual Achievement Award, 2011.
