ross River State governor’s wife, Mrs Obioma Liyel-Imoke has called for the enrolment of more students in science and technology subjects at the basic and senior secondary school levels of education.

She made the call on Friday at the 3rd Innovation JETS Science Teachers/Students Conference and award held at the International Conference Centre, University of Calabar.

Imoke, represented by Mrs Tammie Kammonke, the executive director, Partnership Opportunities for Women Empowerment Realisation, POWER, an NGO she founded, said the objective of the conference was commendable.

She said that the conference, organised by the State Junior Engineers, Technicians and Scientists, JETS, would help to sensitise more students in public and private schools in the state to embrace science and technology.

Imoke commended the state’s JETS team for making Cross River and Nigeria proud by coming fourth globally at a Science Fair held in Taiwan this year.

The first lady, who received the innovation prestigious award at the ceremony in appreciation of her `entrepreneurial excellence,’ promised to do more to justify the award.

“I feel extremely excited to be in the midst of creative geniuses and future icons of science and technology.

“I can see in this hall the Bill Gates, the Isaac Newtons, the Galileos, the Aristotles, the Archimedes and the likes of other notable scientists of this generation,’’ she said.

In her speech, the state’s JETS Coordinator, Mrs Margaret Ene-Ita, said the JETS club is domiciled in public and private senior and junior secondary schools, as well as primary schools in Cross River.

Ene-Ita explained that JETS is a national club that encourages students to study mathematics, science and technology subjects in primary and secondary schools.

“Apart from the academic and practical exercises, JETS students are also taught skills that will help develop their God-given potential’’, she said. NAN
