Ebonyi Police Command has arrested nine suspected cultists, including a school teacher, at the Ishieke campus of the Ebonyi State University.
Briefing journalists in Abakaliki, the Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr Chris Anyanwu, alleged that the suspects were members of the notorious Burkina Faso Confraternity.
According to him, the suspects were arrested by men of the State Anti Robbery Squad, SARS in well coordinated operation following a tip off by some good Nigerians on March 2.
“The men of the SARS of our command, acting on a tip off, smashed a gang of suspected cultists following a well coordinated operation. The cult gang was smashed as they were preparing to initiate new members into their group on March 2. Eight of the nine suspects were arrested and have confessed to their involvement in cult activities on the campus,’’ Anyanwu said.
He said six of the arrested suspects were students of the university while others were a school teacher in Ishieke and a businessman.
The spokesman said that preliminary investigations revealed that the cult members were responsible for recent cult activities in Abakaliki resulting to deaths and rape of many students in Ishieke, Presco and CAS campuses of the university.
