14 sentenced to hang over Egypt revenge killing

A court in Cairo on Monday sentenced 14 men to be hanged for the revenge killing of a merchant and his daughter in a village north of Cairo.

The court found the 14, from two families in the village of Miet Hashim, guilty of breaking into the man’s home in 2010 and slaying him and his daughter.
The attack was in revenge for the killing of a relative of the offender’s days earlier.

The sentences must be approved by the Grand Mufti, Egypt’s head of Islamic jurisprudence, and may be appealed.
Hangings are not announced and figures for the numbers executed are not released.
