The Senate has said that it will investigate the poor handling of the recruitment exercise by the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, which turned into national tragedy resulting to loss of lives of innocent Nigerians.
This followed a motion raised by Senator Atiku Bargudu, under matters of national urgency during its plenary. While urging the federal government to accept responsibility for the incident, the Senate called for a thorough probe of the fiasco.
In his motion, Senator Bargudu however expressed concern over media reports which suggested that some members of the national assembly were allocated slots in the recruitment exercise. As Chairman of Senate Committee on interior, Senator Bargudu said he was not aware that any Senator was allotted slot, as the National Assembly has always advocated a process where every Nigerian could compete freely for jobs without favouritism or nepotism.
Speaking on the tragic incident, Senator Ayogu , said that “government must be able to create a mechanism that establishes how jobs are distributed among Nigerians both within the public and private sectors suggesting outright cancellation of the exercise as it robbed the nation of dignity. People must be held accountable as soon as the Senate begins probe into the recruitment.
Commiserating with victims of the tragedy and their families, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, said government must be mindful of its responsibilities to Nigerians by ensuring that it provides every citizen with adequate means of livelihood through the creation of a social security network.
Ekweremadu noted that NIS is synonymous to tragic recruitment exercises and recalled that a similar tragedy occurred in an NIS recruitment exercise in 2008. The Senate in its prayers commiserated the families of the deceased and urged government to honour those who lost their lives.
