Borno State Special Emergency Relief Committee said that it had spent N27 million on the provision of relief materials to victims of Friday’s attack by insurgents.
The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN reports that inhabitants of five communities located close to Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri were displaced after the attempted attack on the barracks by insurgents.
Dr Bulama Gubio, Chairman of the relief committee constituted by the State Government on Saturday, told newsmen in Maiduguri that the money was used to provide food and other items for the victims.
He added that cash was also given to the victims and that the communities were identified by the committee. “Money and food were also given to families of the military affected by the attack.’’
Gubio stressed that the money was restricted to the provision of “immediate relief” to the victims, and not for the reconstruction of houses destroyed in the attack. We are going to unfold plans for rehabilitation and reconstruction in future,” he said, adding that “rehabilitation camps were not opened by the government in order to avert invasion by non-victims of the attack.”
He, however, said that “technically, we have camps, although they are not physical. Instead of opening camps in schools, we encourage victims to remain in their communities.
“So, we designated their settlements as our camps and that is where we have been meeting them.”
The chairman said eight civilians were killed in the attack, adding that all other casualties were on the side of the sect. NAN
