Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial Zone, Mrs. Nkechi Nwaogu has joined the 2015 gubernatorial contest in Abia in the platform of the ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP.
Nwaogu, the only female aspirant for now, declared her intention to join the race when she visited the state executive body of PDP at the party secretariat in Umuahia.
“Today, I am here to ask my party, to seek from my party and to solicit for your opinion that it is my intention. I have prayed over
it, I have discussed with my family, my immediate people, close relatives and supporters and I have come to the conclusion that if my party would support me that I will run for the post of Abia State governor”.
She continued:”I have come to solicit for your blessings, support and candid decision to look at me, x-ray who Nkechi Nwaogu is over the years and what are her antecedents? What has been her political sagacity? Who is she, can she do it? That is why I prayed over it. God has given me this opportunity today through you people to come and talk to the party because I know that the party is supreme, very important, where we should rancor and where we can put our houses together”.
“I want to say that without the support of the party, I won’t be able to do it and all my dreams would die inside me and I said, God forbid”.
Nwaogu, who is the Senate Committee Chairman on Oil and Gas said that she would consolidate on the legacies of the incumbent governor, Chief Theodore Orji if given the opportunity.
“Presently, we have peace, cordial relationship and unity in this state, all brought by our present governor. My aspiration for the governorship position is to continue from where the present governor stopped”.
“It is my intention as a mother, wife and a grandmother to bring to bear the meek mind of a mother. Some people would say, a woman has never been a governor, but a day begins a story. I am saying that I will ask my people from the standpoint of her capacities and what she has been doing over the years. How do you access her and has she been up-to-date over the years? Can she be given this responsibility as a result of what you know of her?”
“I don’t think that my gender is a disadvantage; rather, it is an advantage. I am assured spiritually that Abia will be the first to produce an elected female governor. I urge you to judge me by what I have done as a legislator and never by my gender,” she said.
Responding, Abia State PDP Chairman, Senator Emma Nwaka, thanked Nwaogu for the respect she has for the party and assured that the party was going to provide a level playing ground for all the aspirants.
Nwaka, while assuring justice and fair play, disclosed that plans were underway for an interactive session between the party members and the aspirants.
