A society of market traders in Osogbo has started the construction of modern toilet facilities, through self help, to promote hygiene, the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN reports.
Chairman of Orisumbare Market Traders Society, Old Garage, Osogbo, Mr Ibikunle Yahaya, disclosed this to the NAN on Thursday.
He said that traders in the market were using “pit toilets” before now.
He said that the society decided to embark on the project to promote healthy living among traders as well as to guard against open defecation.
“We had a pit toilet before now, so we thought with the changing world we should have a water system type of toilet. Now we have reconstructed the toilets and there are two sections for urinating and five rooms for defecating.
“The traders contributed without bitterness towards this project, we did not ask the government for any assistance whatsoever, because this is part of our contribution towards the development of the market.
“We do not want to depend on the government alone; we understand the government has so many things it is doing. We are not saying we do not need the government’s assistance, but this is our initiative because we are the beneficiaries of this project.’’
The chairman disclosed the society’s intention to drill a borehole for easy access to water.
“Let me use this opportunity to tell you that with the new water system for our toilets, we need a borehole for adequate water supply. The traders have been contributing happily toward the borehole and very soon we will do that.
“We are enthusiastic about this project because it will improve hygiene consciousness in the market and among the traders. It will reduce environmental pollution such as urinating in gutters which causes air pollution.
“We appreciate the government effort; they are really trying and doing a lot which we traders are benefiting from, especially the market constructions across the state.
“We hope our dedication and support will make the government to do more for us,’’ Yahaya said. NAN
