Lagos arrests 35 environmental sanitation defaulters

No fewer than 35 people were arrested on Saturday in Badagry, Lagos State, over alleged contravention of the movement restriction order of the state government during environmental sanitation.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN reports that the alleged offenders were arrested by officials of the Kick Against Indiscipline, KAI at the Seme Border and Badagry Town.

Mr Hontonyon Bamgbose, the Chairman, Badagry West Local Council Development Area, LDCA, however, said that there had been an improvement in the response of residents to the exercise.

“The low number of offenders arrested in March shows that the sensitisation campaign by the council on the exercise is yielding results,” he said.

Bamgbose said that the council embarked on the sensitisation to prevent outbreak of an epidemic in the LCDA and the entire Badagry Community.

“It is a thing of joy that our efforts have begun to yield positive results, especially on health-related issues, knowing that Badagry West is a rural area.

“This shows the effect of the aggressive campaign we embarked upon to explain to our people the importance of sanitation,” he said

The council chairman said that the number of people violating the restriction of movement order had reduced compared to the number in the past.

He said that during the February environmental sanitation, only 22 people were arrested over the offence.

“Though there was a slight increase in the number of offenders this month, it still shows that there is an improvement,’’ Bamgbose said.

The chairman said that those arrested would be prosecuted at the Lagos State Special Offences Court at Alausa, Ikeja.

Bamgbose urged the residents not to relent in keeping their environments clean at all times. NAN
