Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday said that he had forgiven his estranged deputy, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and others who may have offended him while in office, especially over his purported third term agenda.
Atiku was vice president in Obasanjo’s administration between 1999 and 2007. He was believed to have along with others, scuttled the move by Obasanjo to amend the constitution to pave way for his controversial third-term ambition.
Obasanjo, who spoke in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, in a reaction to the request of the Northern Youth Leaders Forum, NYLF, after a two-day meeting in Abeokuta, said as a leader and father, he bore no grudge against anybody.
The group had on Saturday asked Obasanjo to forgive Atiku any political sin he committed against him.
“On the request that you made yesterday (Saturday), I do not have any grudge against anybody. And if there is any, I have forgiven all as a father.”
Obasanjo appreciated the group for coming to Abeokuta to make case for a way forward for the country, stressing that since 2003, “the effort of your group has been noteworthy. I am happy that you have also increased in number. Let me appreciate all your support since 2003 and urge you to continue by ensuring that credible leaders are elected in 2015.”
The leader of the delegation and national chairman, Elliot Afiyo, said the leadership of the group came to visit the former president and to identify with his vision for a greater Nigeria.
In a position paper submitted earlier on Saturday, Afiyo stated that, “we have come to you (Obasanjo) as a father indeed, elder statesman for sure, an advanced citizen per excellence, an honest and forthright leader, courageous and bold democrat, a loving and compassionate “to chastise, forgive and embrace both the good and bad characters. In view of this, we humbly request that you forgive your former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of whatever political sin or offence he might have committed against you…”
