NAPTIP mulls anti-trafficking content in schools’ curriculum

Executive Secretary, National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and Other Related Matters, NAPTIP, Mrs. Beatrice Jedy-Agba has called for the infusion of anti human trafficking materials as learning tools into the primary and secondary schools curricula in the country.

According to her, such integration and development of educational tools in the first and second tier of educational system will help in deepening early warning systems at the most critical stage of the development of a child in Nigeria.

The NAPTIP boss made this call on Monday during an advocacy visit to the Nigeria Educational Research and Development Council, NERDC, Abuja.

She restated the importance of education as a tool against human trafficking via the design and development of necessary educational resources which is the core mandate of the council.

She said NAPTIP is seeking partners to chart a new path in deepening advocacy and education as key tools in combating human trafficking.

NAPTIP boss said the agency is willing to partner with government and private institutions to develop resource materials for use in schools to help to sensitize the children on the nature of the scourge.

Earlier in his address, the Executive Secretary of Nigeria Educational Research and Development Council, NERDC, Professor Godswill Obioma said the council has recorded successes in related ventures like HIV & Aids, Drug Abuse and value re-orientation through curriculum design and development, which will bring to bear on this partnership with NAPTIP.

Professor Obioma lamented the clear and present danger which human trafficking has become and the critical need to develop early warning materials which can only be mainstreamed into the educational system through the curriculum development centre of the council.

He promised all the assistance of the council to the Agency in the proposed strategic alliance starting with a memorandum of understanding
