President Goodluck Jonathan has commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, Senator Bala Mohammed for his drive in tackling the challenges of portable water supply in the territory.
President Jonathan, who gave the commendation while commissioning the phase 3 and 4 of Lower Usuma Dam water treatment plant project in Abuja, added that the result of the various initiatives of the Minister in providing dividends of democracy in the nation’s capital is yielding positive results.
To this end, President Jonathan acknowledged that, “without clean and portable water to service the people, all the magnificent buildings by government and private sectors channeled to the FCT water board source will suffer”.
President Jonathan hinted that, “this project is among the 12 dams that had been completed since the last year presidential summit on water. Also 125, 000 jobs were being created”.
Earlier in his welcome address, the FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed said, “the realisation of this great project represents a major landmark in the pursuit of the transformation agenda of the President, it is our vision of to build a capital city that will rank among the top 20 cities in the world, knowing fully well that the Abuja water master plan is an integral part of the Abuja master plan”.
In the same vein, the Minister noted that the project contract which was awarded in 2005 to a British Company, Biwaters, was in order to meet the growing demand for portable water in the FCT and also augment the already completed water infrastructure in the nation’s capital.
Senator Bala said that the full impact of the project will be fully realised when the Trunk Mains Conveyance System and Storage Reservoir as well as the Pipeline Distribution Network, Servicing phase 2 and 3 of the city are completed.
The Minister assured the residents that FCT administration is working assiduously to ensure speedy completion of some projects that will enhance a good water distribution network to Phase 2 and 3 of Abuja, covering districts like Gwarimpa, Kafe, Katampe, Wuye, Jahi and Jabi.
