For flouting the directive of compulsory referral of all pregnant women by the Ondo State Government to government health facilities for safe delivery, a Mission Birth Attendant, Mrs Victoria Paul, is now cooling her heels in police net.
Mrs Paul was arrested by police for causing the death of a pregnant woman, Lola Fakuajo, at her mission home, Apostolic Church, Popoola Street , Street, Stadium road, Akure.
The 28-year-old Lola Fakuajo was being attended to by Paul before she reportedly ruptured her womb and was rushed to Mother and Child Hospital, Akure, where she reportedly gave up the ghost .
Lola reportedly lost her life before doctors could attend to her.
On hearing that Lola Fakuajo had died, Victoria took to her heels and it took government officials effort to nab her in the house she reportedly hid herself under the bed.
Mrs Victoria, after being arrested admitted knowing that the state government had warned them not to deliver pregnant women.
The late woman husband ,Mr Sunday Fakuajo said he was not at home when his wife was taken to the Mission Home until evening when he was called and saw his wife in a sorry state, he then rush her to the Mother and Child Hospital where she gave up the ghost.
The Chief Medical Director, Mother and Child Hospital Akure, Dr Adesina Akintan said the late patient was brought very late in a bad condition which led to her death.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Dayo Adeyanju said the state government would explore all means to drive its infant and Maternal Campaign to a success and to ensure that pregnancy is no longer a death sentence in the state.
Adeyanju stated that the state government will leave no stone unturned to ensure that pregnant women give birth where skilled birth attendants will attend to them.
He said, government will use stick and carrot approach in driving the ‘Agbebiye’’ initiative to success.
Adeyanju therefore thanked the Abiye Vanguards and Traditional Birth Attendant for their support towards maternal death reduction in the state.
The special Assistance to Governor Mimiko on Maternal Death Reduction, Mrs Funmilola Oluwadare decried the habit where some people arrogantly flout government’s directives.
