Education has been described as a viable instrument for social civilisation and economic development. This was the submission of Osun State Governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola at the 3rd convocation ceremony of Osun State University, UNIOSUN in Osogbo on Saturday.
Governor Aregbesola who noted that education was a strong agent of socialisation, urged stakeholders in the sector to restore its lost glory.
The governor called on nation’s ivory towers to invent new methodology in their teachings and research that would make the nation’s education to be in tandem with global reality.
While noting that his administration was committed to the advancement of education, Aregbesola said the gesture became imperative to free youths from the shackle of poverty, ignorance and disease.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Osun State University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adekunle Basiru Okesina said the Institution will continue to promote academic excellence so as to produce globally competitive graduates.
Professor Okesina, who disclosed that over 1200 students graduated at the convocation, noted that twenty of the students graduated with first class and 300 graduated with second class upper classification and 658 with second class lower as well as 178 graduated with third class.
While attributing the delay in the convocation ceremony to ASUU strike, the vice chancellor hinted that the institution had recorded breakthrough in the areas of research, innovation and entrepreneurship training
He said within the seven years of existence of the institution, the university had impacted greatly in the lives of its immediate communities and the nation as a whole especially through its new methodology in vegetables production.
Professor Okesina maintained that the institution is currently working on a project that is aimed at controlling mosquito and its attendant effect on the society.
Condemning the recent security threat to the lives of students of the ivory tower living off campus, the vice chancellor said the university in conjunction with parent forum and community leaders as well as police force had developed a new approach towards policing the area to guarantee security of lives and property for the students.
The vice chancellor noted that the institution was fully committed to capacity building and manpower development to facilitate the nation’s economic growth.
While speaking with Nigerian Pilot at the event, the Chairman, Ceremonials Committee and Provost, College of Law, Professor Olayiwola Oladele said about 1,184 were graduating students and that out of this number 513 are from Osun State with another eight students also from Osun among the 20 scholars.
Prof.Oladele assured that the institution would not relent in the area of research towards the upliftment of the students of the institution
