Bayelsa to revamp craft development centres

Bayelsa State government says it will revamp all its craft development centres with a view to making them institutions of excellence in  relevant skills acquisition for teeming youths and the out of school.

The state Commissioner for Local Government Administration, Chief Mitema Obordor disclosed this during an on the spot assessment of facilities in Government Craft Development Centres at Ayakoro in Ogbia and Polaku in Yenagoa Local Governmentt Areas.

Obordor said that the present administration is committed to investment in human resource, with special focus on the youth as a way of developing their God given talents thereby making them useful to themselves and the society.

The commissioner, who said an idle mind is the devil’s workshop, contended that training of the youth in relevant skills by the various craft development centres will also provide middle class professionals who can be self employed and get job placement in multinational companies operating in the state.

He posited that lack of patronage of technical education by successive government was responsible for the decay in infrastructure at the craft centres, as he expressed the resolve of the present administration to restore the centres to their glorious past.

He also divulged the Ministry of Local Government Administration’s plan to expand the centres’ curriculum to make them more relevant to modern demands and reality, appealing to young people in the state to take advantage of the opportunity offered by the craft centres.

While assuring the Principal of Government Craft Development Centre, Ayakoro, Mr Jack Agbele that urgent step would be taken to reclaim some of the centre’s facilities being washed away by erosion and promised to ensure that training equipment and other consumables were supplied to all the centres as at when due.

At the Government Craft Development Centre, Polaku, Chief Obordor expressed satisfaction with the general cleanliness of the school and commended management for keeping the flag flying in spite of challenges.

Earlier, the principal of Government Craft Development Centre, Evang. Zifaye Willki had commended the commissioner for the step taken so far to improve staff welfare and pledged staff loyalty in achieving corporate goals.
