The Anambra State Government has set up a one-stop building material and soil laboratory to ensure standard buildings in the state.

Gov. Willie Obiano disclosed this on Tuesday at the scene of collapsed building at St Christopher Anglican Church, Odo-Akpu Onitsha, which claimed four lives on Monday.

Obiano, who was received by the Anglican Bishop on the Niger, Owen Nwokolo, said the laboratory would be commissioned next week in Awka.

“The laboratory will test and certify all building materials and soil texture of building sites in the state.

“It will operate like drug laboratories to ensure maximum quality in order to ensure that only standard quality materials are used and to forestall future occurrence in the state’’, he said.

Obiano directed the state Commissioner for Works, Mr Callistus Ilozumba, to carry out technical survey of other buildings in the same compound with the collapsed building.

`The commissioner would verify the status of other buildings in this compound to ensure they meet the required standard’’, he said.

He warned builders to ensure that they did not cut corners in handling building projects adding that it would henceforth prosecute any contractor whose work collapsed in the state.

He sympathised with the Anglican Church and families of the victims over the collapsed building.
