The Cross River State division of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has established the State Inter-Agency Advisory Committee on Voter Education and Publicity ahead of the flag-off distribution of permanent voters’ card.
The commission, which is made up of the 18-members drawn from the media, NGOs, faith-based organizations, women groups and stakeholders in the electoral process including key government agencies of various media organizations, was inaugurated in Calabar on Tuesday.
The 18-member committee had a 7-point terms of reference from INEC.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mike Igini, who inaugurated the committee urged the electorates to be properly informed for a better electoral process and democracy.
He affirmed that the commission is expected to give civic and voter education to the electorates, especially as INEC distributes permanent voter cards and continuous voter registration.
The committee is also to ensure effective strategies for public enlightenment, undertaking of periodic review of voter education activities in the state among other functions.
He stated that the continuous voter registration would capture those who did not register in 2011 and those who had irregular registration during the period so that they would be eligible to vote in future elections and that the distribution of Permanent Voter Card in Cross River would start July 18 and end July 20.
Igini reported that INEC would want Nigerians to take ownership of the electoral process and show more commitment to the country.
