Gov. Jonah Jang of Plateau on Saturday urged Nigerians to observe regular exercise to enable them to stay fit, healthy and live longer.
Jang, who gave the advice at the 25th edition of Olympic Day Run in Jos, said exercise was crucial for the body.
Represented by Mr Agwom Sani-Zandi, Commissioner for Solid Minerals Development, Jang advised people to know their health conditions before embarking on strenuous exercise.
“Always check your health conditions with your doctors before you embark on any exercise, don’t go into a strenuous activity that your body cannot accommodate,’’ he said.
The governor said that his administration embarked on massive projects in the sports sector in recognition of its importance.
“The construction of FIFA standard stadium on Zaria Road is in recognition of this fact and we are also going to construct a multipurpose sports complex.
“We have also directed that applications for the establishment of schools must be accompanied by provision for sporting facilities.
“In the absence of such facilities, no approval will be given for the establishment of an academic institution.
“This is to enable students and teachers to participate in sports, apart from their academic endeavours,’’ he said.
Jang said his administration had ordered the reintroduction of school competitions abandoned overtime.
The schools competitions, he said, would help in discovering talents that would be developed and in the long run to represent both the state and country at national and international competitions.
The Chairman, Plateau Athletics Association, Mr Kichime Gotau, told the News Agency of the Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines that the event was an initiative of the World Olympic Committee.
Gotau said the committee earmarked the day for stakeholders in the sporting world to create awareness on the importance of sports.
The Marketing Manager, Grand Cereals Nigeria Ltd., Mr Tope Banjo, said that exercise was important for human beings.
“We have been sponsoring the annual event for the past five years and we will continue to do that as long as our brand is affecting the society positively,’’ he said. (NAN)
