A non-governmental organisation for physically challenged and vulnerable persons, the Eastern Star Care Foundation, has appealed to the Director General of the National Agency for Foods and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, Dr. Paul Orhii, to assist them in becoming independent and self-reliant by reducing fees for certification of their products.
Speaking exclusively yesterday with the Nigerian Pilot, the foundation’s coordinator, Evangelist Upright Wonder, said the appeal became important so as to enable the physically challenged and vulnerable persons who did not want to take to begging, become self-reliant and independent.
The foundation coordinator, who is also a member of the Association of Micro Entrepreneurs of Nigeria, said that the amount being demanded for before they could have their products certified was beyond their reach as most of them depended on charity.
According to the coordinator, “we are appealing to the Director-General of NAFDAC to bring down the registration fees for our products. If those who are not physically challenged are finding it difficult to have their products certified, what is the fate of people in our conditions.
“And we all know that if these products go to the market without NAFDAC registration number one may be arrested. The fee for the certification is more than what we can afford’’, he said.
She called on people living with disabilities to desist from act of begging, advising them to associate themselves with organisations where they could learn a trade and become useful to themselves and the country at large.
The foundation will be celebrating its 12 years anniversary on Sunday.
