Kogi State House of Assembly has called on the management of Dangote Cement company, Obajana to adequately compensate victims of road accidents allegedly caused by its trucks on the highways.
In their plenary session yesterday, the lawmakers called for the adoption of a motion following the motion on Matters of Urgent Public Importance moved by the Chief Whip of the House, Alhaji Suleiman Babadoko, representing Lokoja 1 constituency.
The legislator said that the fatal auto crashes involving Dangote Cement trucks on highways in and around Lokoja resulting in killing and maiming of passengers as well as innocent pedestrians have become an issue of public concern.
He said the latest of such incidents happened when the trailer belonging to Dangote group of companies lost control and veered off its lane and rammed into the vehicles carrying passengers at the Military check point in Otokiti-Lokoja, adding that five commercial vehicles were damaged beyond repair while a woman passenger lost her life with several others injured.
Babadoko therefore prayed the House to pass a resolution mandating the management of Dangote Cement to “adequately compensate” those whose vehicles were damaged beyond repair, the injured passengers and the family of the deceased woman.
Seconding the motion, Majority Leader of the House, Alhaji Yakubu Yunusa (PDP-Ofu) said, “We were so happy to receive Dangote Cement Company when it came but unfortunately, it is our albatross, we are buying cement at exorbitant rates”.
However, a member of the House, Henry Ojuola (APC-Yagba East), among other contributors, cautioned that rather than condemning Dangote, the management of the cement company should be summoned to tender their side of the story, adding that there should be fair hearing.
