The Nigeria Institute of Advanced Legal Studies has called for the abrogation of death penalty from the country’s law system.
Director General of the Institute, Professor Epiphany Azinge made the appeal yesterday at a courtesy call on the Speaker of the House of Representative, Aminu Tambuwal.
He admonished the National Assembly to remove the law from our statutes because it was no longer fashionable globally.
‘We are championing its advocacy, Azinge noted, adding that ‘it is a matter of despair that our lawmakers still clamour for it’.
Azinge explained that the continued existence of the law in Nigeria’s justice administration system does not put the country in good light in the comity of nations and in line with global best practices.
The institute’s boss also canvassed collaboration for building capacity for lawmakers as well as make inputs in the lawmaking process of the House of Representatives in particular and the National Assembly in general.
He told his host of its contribution in the amendment of section 2 of the constitution in the next round of constitution amendment as a way of making the section justifiable, while commending the leadership quality of Tambuwal which has made the house stable.
Responding, Honorable Tambuwal charged the institute to assist the House in reviewing most archaic laws still operational in the country, adding that such gesture will bring the nation’s legislation in conformity with today’s reality.
