Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has commended President Goodluck Jonathan for setting up special funds for victims of the Boko Haram insurgency.

In a press statement at the weekend, CAN President, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, said the institution of the special fund headed by former Defence Minister, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, to carter for the needs of victims of insurgency had demonstrated that President Jonathan is indeed the father of the nation and a father to all Nigerians irrespective of the background of the victims of the crisis.

Pastor Oritsejafor declared that the Christian body fully supports the initiative.

He said: “It has been the conviction of CAN that victims of the senseless killings and wanton destruction of property should be given some `lifeline’ in whatever name it could be called and we are glad that the President has heard our appeals and responded appropriately.”

The clergyman however prayed that funds realised from the donations into the scheme should be judiciously used for the real victims affected of the crisis and urged those mandated with the management of the programme to have the fear of God in their operations.

The statement said Federal Government through the initiative, had done much to bring hope and reduce the psychological effect that insurgency had brought to the victims.

“I honestly believe that this initiative will give hope to our people and instill in them a sense of belonging while reducing the psychological and physical impact of the burden created as a result of the losses incurred in the crisis.”
