Reigning champions of Nigeria Women’s Basketball League, Deepwater basketball club of Lagos will tomorrow inside the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, put their title on the grand finale of the 9th edition Zenith Bank-sponsored female basketball league.
First, Deepwater defeated Sunshine Angels 80-46 to set the stage for the final encounter against First Bank or Dolphins Queens who were still playing as at press time.
To get to this stage, the coach, Lateef Erin-Folami-tutored side maintained un-beaten runs. In the first phase held at the indoor sports hall of the Abuja National Stadium, in March, the oil and gas ladies, as they are fondly called, won all their matches to lead group A that consisted of nine teams.
The team, sponsored by First Deepwater Discovery Limited, continued their impressive run when the second phase dunked-off in Asaba, Delta State.
Playing against hard fighting teams like IGP Queens, Plateau Rocks, FCT Angels and Coal City Queens, the defending champions still went undefeated in all the matches played in Asaba. A feat that secured them ticket for the final play –offs in Lagos.
Deepwater proved book makers right by again winning all their matches in the first round of the final eight in Lagos.
To maintain a 100 per cent record and remain on top, Deepwater recorded an 87-62 victory over Dolphins in last group A game. With the victory they set up a semi -final clash against Sunshine Angels, while First Bank clashed with Dolphins.
