As the battle for Delta South senatorial seat gathers momentum, indications have emerged on why the former Director General of Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Mr. Temisan Omatseye is being supported by leaders and people from the district to represent them at the Senate come 2015.
The decision for Omatseye, an Itsekiri, to be the next Senator for Delta South is based on wide consultation and understanding that the position has been zoned to Itsekiri after it has been previously held by Isoko, Stella Omu and presently James Manager, an Ijaw.
It is the belief of those supporting Omatseye’s candidature that, with his wide international contacts and in-depth knowledge of the maritime and shipping industry, including the oil and gas, he would facilitate the development of dormant Warri, Koko and Sapele ports and assist in driving new investments in the region.
Omatseye, the likely Delta South senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has consulted with major stakeholders, electorate and is said to have made frantic efforts to emerge Senator for the district in 2015.
A prominent politician from the district who spoke to Nigerian Pilot in confidence said, “We are aware of some persons eyeing the Senate but our choice is Mr. Temisan Omatseye, and the political party on which he is running is not our problem; what we want is the best and reliable person to be our next Senator.”
According him, “Omatseye’s reputation is impeccable and with good track record in administration and leadership, the people of Delta South are ready to vote for him because Omatseye has shown his determination, commitment and willingness to transform Delta South”.
Also, a chieftain of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Delta South said Omatseye has the capability, quality and competence to represent Delta South effectively at the Senate. “Omatseye can be trusted to attract dividends of democracy to the people of Delta South”, he said.
He added that Omatseye is expected to bring to bear his experience in human capacity development and issues relating to environmental degradation of the area.
