A Federal High sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, yesterday ordered that the deposed traditional ruler of Rumuepirikom community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Eze Anthony Owabie, be remanded in the Port Harcourt maximum prison custody pending the determination of his bail application.
Justice Uche Agomuo gave the order after listening to arguments from both defence and prosecution counsels.
The officer-in-charge of Legal Department of the police, Mr. Paul Idenyenmin opposed his bail application.
The monarch, who was arraigned on account charge of illegal possession of firearms, was denied bail by the court, though the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge which was read to him in English language.
The O/C Legal in opposing the bail application argued that he was served processes in the morning while in the court by the defence counsel, Mr. Emenike Ebete.
Ebete had prayed the court to grant his client bail, stating that the elderly monarch had been in police custody since his arrest on September 13, this year.
Ruling, Justice Agomuo told the respondent’s lawyer that justice was a three-way traffic and ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody.
He said: “Justice is a three-way traffic. It is justice for you; it is justice for him; it is justice for the court. You cannot coarse him (O/C Legal) having served him this morning in court.”
She adjourned the matter to October 8, this year, for hearing on the bail application.
Eze Owabie was arrested and detained on August 13, this year, by the State Police Command for allegedly shooting his son with a single-barrelled gun at their residence, Wimpey junction, in Obio/Akpor.
