In Ughelli Town, Delta State rampaging armed bandits at the weekend attacked a new generation bank (name withheld), shot one of its staff and carted away an estimated sum of N4.5 million.
A victim of the incident, who does not want his name in the print, is currently receiving treatment in a private hospital in the area. The victim said; “I was sent to the bank by a politician when the robbers came attacking everybody in the bank premises and in the process I was shot on my legs”. He said the robbers made away with huge sums of money.
But the Police Public Relations Officer in the State, DSP Celestina Kalu confirmed that the hoodlums attacked another bank in the community after robbing the first bank. DSP Celestina said the robbers also attacked a customer who was coming out from the bank along the expressway in the community, adding that, the police is on top of the situation with a view to bringing the hoodlums to book.
Meanwhile, a native doctor whose duty, as the member of a kidnap cum armed robbery gang it is to provide charms for the gang members so as for them to evade arrest, have been arrested along with three others by the police detectives in Ogume Community Ndokwa West Local Government Area of the state.
DSP Celestina Kalu confirmed that the police were dispatched from the state CID to collaborate with the police in the area; saying, they confronted the robbery suspects in their hideouts in a gun battle before they gained the upper hands.
DSP Celestina Kalu disclosed that the suspects would be charged to court on completion of investigation and added that, the police recovered various forms of charms including six cut to size guns and other dangerous weapons from the suspects.
Narrating his involvement to our correspondent at the police state CID, one of the suspects, the herbalist, explained that the three other suspects came to him as a herbalist that they needed charms that would immune them against gun shot and cutlass cut.
He said that the mistake he made was to provide them with the charms without asking them what they would use them for. In his word; “I thought they needed the charms for protection, but now they have implicated me in a robbery case”.
It was reliably gathered that in the last two weeks, Ughelli town and its environ have been under siege of robbers and cultists, leaving its residents to sleeping with one eye open.
