The Federal Government has called for greater cooperation between state and local governments in the area of community policing to help check terrorism in the country.
Mr Mike Omeri, Coordinator, National Information Centre, made the call at a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday.
Omeri said that combined efforts of the two tiers of government would help to effectively checkmate the activities of terrorists in all parts of the country.
He said that the federal government had condemned the incessant attacks on innocent and hapless Nigerians at different locations in the country by the Boko Haram sect, especially in the North-East.
He called on Nigerians to be extra-vigilant and security conscious within their environment to enable them identify and thwart the activities of terrorists.
According to him, Nigerians should be wary of activities of suicide bombers and their accomplices who deceive unsuspecting members of the public to perpetrate their evil acts.
He said that prompt information from the citizens to the appropriate security personnel and agencies would facilitate effective check on the activities of terrorists.
The coordinator said that the federal government had commended the gallantry displayed by the Nigerian security agencies who repelled the recent attacks on Damaturu.
According to him, the courage shown by ordinary Nigerians in resisting terror attacks as witnessed during the recent bombing of the Grand Mosque in Kano was also highly commendable.
He said given the security challenges facing the nation and against the backdrop of the 2015 general elections some Nigerians were poised to use it to achieve their selfish interests.
This, Omeri said, include the deployment of IT knowledge and services by some privileged Nigerians for the achievement of their selfish interests and goals.
“The centre appeals to Nigerians to be mindful of the activities of selfish and unscrupulous persons who might want to undermine the greater interest of the country and welfare of its citizens,” he said.
He said that Nigerians must not allow the selfish interests of some Nigerians to becloud their sense of duty and obligation to the nation. (NAN)
