Authority of the University of Ilorin has signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with Globacom Limited for the establishment of seamless telecommunication services within the University campus and its environs.
The services to be covered by the MoU are Closed Users Group, CUG, service, additional internet bandwidth services and periodic training for Unilorin staff on new and emerging telecommunication technologies.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, signed the MoU on behalf of the University while Globacom’s Chief Commercial Director, Mr. Prabhat Aggarwal, signed on behalf of the company.
The telecommunication solutions to be provided will benefit the students, staff and members of their families as well as residents of the University of Ilorin and its environs.
According to the document, “CUG is a platform on which a group of lines activated and placed on the same platform can call one another free of cost upon the payment of certain amount as the monthly CUG access fee by such lines”.
The Agreement, which shall be for an initial period of two years, makes it incumbent on Globacom to supply the University of Ilorin with 15,000 SIM cards to be sold to students, staff and members of the Unilorin community at a monthly rental fee of N500.00 per line.
It also stipulates that the company shall assist through the provision of multiple registration points for the Unilorin CUG customers to enable them have access to SIM registrations services seamlessly. In addition, qualified subscribers already on Globacom and/or other networks shall be migrated to the Unilorin CUG platform.
According to the Agreement, Globacom will also ensure consistent network availability and standard quality of service to ensure the success of the Unilorin telecommunications solution initiative.
Also, the company shall provide the University, through its Glo 1 Unit, additional internet bandwidth services to increase the present capacity to STEM 4 (620 Mbps) capacity.
It further stipulates that Globacom will assist the University of Ilorin in capacity building by training its staff on new and emerging telecommunications technologies from time to time.
“The company has also agreed to support the University in the sponsorship of awards to the Best Graduating Students in all Faculties during convocation ceremonies.”
On its part, the University of Ilorin has however agreed to ensure that the initial 15,000 SIM cards to be supplied are activated within six months from the date of delivery by Globacom. The University shall also “encourage usage and maintenance of the lines by the end users upon activation”.
The University also agreed that on no account would the SIM cards be distributed or sold to non-members of the Unilorin community.
Speaking after the Memorandum signing, the Vice-Chancellor said that the MoU is important to the University as it would go a long way in satisfying the telecommunication needs of members of the University community.
Also in his remarks, the Chief Commercial Director of Globacom disclosed that the CUG component of the agreement, in particular, would bring down the cost of talking with colleagues and family members for people in the group.
