OOU students kick against no pay, no exam policy

The students of Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU, Ago Iwoye, on Monday embarked on a protest in an attempt to stop the no pay no examination policy plan on semester examinations.

The protest, according to the eyewitness, erupted as a result of the Ogun State government’s pronouncement on Sunday that, students who are yet to pay their tuition fees must not be allowed to sit for the semester examinations.

Despite the protest, the school authority had maintained that the policy of ‘no pay, no exams’ must stand.

Acting registrar of the university, Omolara Osunsanya confirmed that the university still stands on the policy.

In her words: “Students’ protest will not make the institution repeal its position on the tuition fees and the examinations would continue.”

Osunsanya also revealed that the management is acting in line with the National University Commission, NUC’s directive.

“In line with the demand of the federal government through the NUC’s request that all universities should provide a comprehensive students audit within six weeks, any student of this university who is in doubt of his/her status should urgently see his/her provost/dean or the dean of student affairs for confirmation,” a statement by the university authority reads.

“The public is requested to note that only students with matriculation numbers are considered eligible students of the university. Parents are hereby requested to confirm that their children and wards have matriculation numbers to qualify for being listed on the federal government audit list.

“Only regularised students on the federal government Audit List with authentic matriculation number will be issued with identity cards before examination.

“All students are advised to abide by this directive in their own interest,” the acting registrar explained.

Meanwhile, normalcy has returned to the University after some hours of protest, but Monday’s proposed examination was put on hold.
