Bayelsa State Police Command yesterday warned the youths with respect to unauthorized and unlawful gathering of persons or group of persons, without a duly approved Police permit.
The statement issued by ASP Asinim Butswat, Police Public Relations Officer, noted that, “this has became imperative, against the backdrop of an ugly development, where ex-militants came out, in large numbers, and gathered at the Tombia Roundabout at about 0600hrs, of Friday 13th March and protesting Without any formal approval by the State Police Command’’.
ASP Butswat added that, “The protest was organized by some ex-militants, under the aegis of Ex-Freedom Fighters, in the Niger Delta, and led by a notorious ex-militant, one Eric Paul a.k.a Militant General Ogunboss. They were expressing their grievances to the State Government over an alleged non-inclusion of their members for the signing of surveillance contract, from the Federal Government. On sighting a reinforced unit of Mobile Police Men, the protesters became violent and started throwing stones at a Police vehicle, a Mercedes Lorry that conveyed Mobile Men. The Police repelled the attack, by dispersing the rioters with teargas. The Police Lorry was however, vandalized by the protesters.”
Concluding, he said; ‘’Furthermore, the Command hereby wishes to state categorically, that it will not condone any act(s) of illegality by any person or group of persons in the guise of protest’’.
