The governorship candidate of the Labour Party, LP in Akwa Ibom state, Senator Helen Esuene have pledged to address the widening gap between the rich and poor in the state if elected governor in the April 11 governorship election.
Esuene made the pledge during a grand rally of the party in Uyo where she expressed dissatisfaction with the growing income disparity in the state despite the huge allocations accruing to it.
The LP governorship candidate maintained that the people of the state have no business with poverty if the resources of the state have been properly managed and appropriated.
“The gap between the rich and the poor in Akwa Ibom is very wide and is increasing by the day. It is this disparity that my administration will try to reduce when elected governor of the state.
“My government will take deliberate and conscious steps to increase and strengthen capacity for the working class. We will run an administration where a poor man will be encouraged to put in his best.
“Labour Party is a party for the poor and down trodden and will continue to support the wishes and aspirations of such people to grow and contribute their quota to the growth of the society by ensuring that their capacities are strengthened,” the Senator said.
She said that trade and industrial clusters would be established to increase the value of services offered by traders, artisans and craftsmen to the society.
“It is such that the services of artisans and craftsmen will be polished and refined even for exports so that a product or service that have fetched the person N1000 will fetch the person N10,000 by reason of exposing them to the international market,” she said.
Esuene who expressed joy with the level of acceptance of the LP in the state stated that it was a sign that residents of the area are prepared for a new level of self actualization.
She commended past governors of the state for their efforts to develop the area and pledged to continue with the uncommon transformation programmes of the present administration.
She however said that more emphasis would be placed on revitalising agriculture by transforming the rural areas with better infrastructure with rural health and tourism.
Earlier in a remark the National Chairman of LP, Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdusalam expressed confidence that the acceptance enjoyed by Esuene in the state, the party would produce the first democratically elected female governor in Nigeria.
The chairman said that the party has remained in the forefront of strengthening and increasing the role of women, youths and the masses on the development of the country hence its adoption of a woman as her governorship candidate in the state.
Highlight of the occasion include the presentation of flags to the party’s candidates in this weekend’s National Assembly elections.
