Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday gave a pass mark to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC over the use of card readers.
Chief Obasanjo who spoke with Journalists yesterday after his accreditation at his ward 11 in Abeokuta North Local Government area of Ogun State, said the card reader functioned perfectly.
He said voting is a constitutional right which must be exercised every other four years.
He said, “‎It is a constitutional issue and every four years, we must go through this ‘ritual’.
“What I have gone through is very okay they checked my card, my finger print and they said it was okay and that I should come back and vote.”
He however appealed to Nigerians to maintain the peaceful atmosphere witnessed at the beginning of the exercise.
On the non availability of Permanent Voter Cards in his ward, Obasanjo said, “‎They have not gotten all the cards, but at this hour, there’s not much anybody can do. What we do hope is that, in the upcoming election, two weeks from now, maybe those without cards now will have their cards then.
Meanwhile, Senator Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State has voiced his frustration at the level of delay occasioned by the use of card readers but was quick to express his readiness for democracy.
Amosun who was on queue for more than two hours at his Ajura ward of Obafemi Owode local government area of Ogun State, said the people of the country will want the election to be technology driven.
He however kicked against the lack of Permanent Voter Cards to so many people in Ogun State promising to speak about it after the presidential elections.
He said, the worst form of democracy is better than the best form of the military, if you take it from that stand-point, then, we have started, we are bringing technology into what we are doing, gradually, we want our election to be technology driven.
“We are still not yet there; because you will notice that I was on the queue and the people are still there, either the card reader is slow, is not working etc.‎ but for me, if this will make the election credible and everybody would see that it has been demonstrated clearly that it is fair, free and transparent, I think everybody will want to endure.
“Some of our people especially in Ogun state did not get their PVC I will still talk about ‎that after voting, because as you can see, our people are not happy; they are demoralised, despite the promises that INEC made, they couldn’t fulfill their promises and I will still talk about that, that is why I want to vote and experience what all Nigerians are experiencing; we are all the same.
