100 babies delivered daily in IDP camps across Borno State

Officials working at various Internally Displaced Persons’, IDP; camps have raised alarm over the upsurge of babies being delivered across those camps in Borno State.
Consequently, the officials are calling for local and international assistance to cater for the growing needs of these women as well as their children.
Also in the loop are the over 200 women rescued from Boko Haram dens in Sambisa Forest who have been confirmed as having been impregnated by the terrorists.
Boko Haram militants have kidnapped more than 2,000 women and girls since the beginning of last year, many of whom were subjected to sexual slavery.
A large number of the women and girls rescued by the Nigerian army in Sambisa Forest in recent weeks were visibly pregnant.
In a report titled “Boko Haram: 214 Out Of 234 Rescued Women Are Pregnant – UNFPA”, Elombah.com had reported that 214 out of the 234 girls have been found to be pregnant, according to reports from United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, formerly the United Nations Fund for Population Activities.
The disclosure was made by Executive Director, UNFPA, Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin in Lagos.
According to Prof. Osotimehin, the organization had seen more than 16,000 pregnancies and deliveries in northeast Nigeria in the past year.
According to Alhaji Grema Terab, the executive chairman of Borno’s State Emergency Management Agency, the IDP camps “record an average of between five and six births in each of the 21 camps daily.”
He stated further that “The state government is solely responsible for their daily feeding and provision of other needs,” hence the clarion calls for local and international assistance.
