Ahead of the June inauguration of the 8th National Assembly, a rights group under the aegis of ‘New Nigerian Initiative Vanguard,’ NNIV, on Sunday drummed support for the candidature of Senator Ahmed Lawan (North-East) in the race for the senate president.
In a statement made available to news men in Abuja yesterday by its National Co-ordinator, Prince Taiwo Alebiosu, the group described Senator Lawan as a detribalised Nigerian whose priority has always been the unity and progress of Nigeria over the years.
Prince Alebiosu pointed out that if elected as the Senate President, Senator Lawan would be a rallying point for the third arm government in the country which would further assist in deepening the nation’s growing democracy.
According to the statement, “we have painstakingly examined all the contestants for the position, we discovered that all of them are eminently qualified but we also discovered that Senator Lawan stands out, he is a detribalised Nigerian, an administrator per excellence who will bring his wealth of experience to bear in the 8th National Assembly in the two chambers, the Senate and the House of Representatives, as the Chairman of the National Assembly.
“For an instance, the Senate Committee on Public Accounts was a dead Committee before he was made the Chairman of the Committee by the outgoing 7th Senate under the leadership of Senator David Mark. Today look at how he had transformed it to a vibrant Committee, and mind you, the Public Accounts Committee is the only constitutionally recognised committee of all the committees.”
Prince Alebiosu further added that “it is also interesting to note that Senator Lawan today is the only one among the senators that has his aides across the zones, his senior legislative aide, SLA, is from Edo state, while another senior aide is from the South South and one of his senior drivers is a Yoruba man from Ekiti state, all these are facts which can be confirmed, but go and find out of other candidates, the reverse will be the case, but for Lawan we see him as a rallying point for all Nigerians, he will build on the foundation already laid down by the outgoing Senate President, for a solid and a vibrant nation Nigerians deserve”.
The group therefore appealed to all ranking senators and the incoming ones irrespective of their political affiliation to look critically and vote for Senator Lawan as the president of the 8th National Assembly in the overall interest of the nation.
The group also pointed out that it was supporting the candidature of Senator Lawan because of his clean records in both public and private life, saying “he is a clean man without any blemish and without any pending or determined criminal case anywhere in the country or abroad”.
The group declared the intention of its members to embark on a sensitization massive campaign for the candidature of Senator Lawan from today across the six geopolitical zone of the country
