Ahead of the inauguration of the 8th National Assembly in June, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, will now complete the 7th Assembly.
This is because the Speaker and Sokoto State Governor-elect, Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, will be sworn-in on May 29 to take charge of the state affairs, thus paving way for his deputy to carry on with the activities of the House.
Tambuwal gave the hint on Tuesday at an interactive session with the House Press Corps.
He explained that the 1999 Constitution (as amended) did not capture the possible vacuum that could have arisen when a sitting speaker emerges governor of a state.
The Speaker, whose tenure is statutorily ending on May 29, noted that in order not to leave a vacuum, they had resolved to suspend the House Rules to enable the deputy speaker take charge of the affairs of the House and lead it to its closure.
The suspension of the House Rules will also empower the deputy speaker to preside over the House until a new Speaker is elected for the 8th Assembly.
Though the House Rules provide for a Speaker Pro Tempore (provisional Speaker), their reign can only be established in the case of a removal of a Speaker by way of impeachment, resignation, death or indisposition.
The Speaker commended the House Press Corps for helping in stabilizing the Green Chamber and keeping faith with the tenets of democracy.
He pledged to continue his service to the nation as governor and to the Nigerian people.
Tambuwal further expressed optimism that the 8th Assembly would improve on their achievements.
According him, “The 7th Assembly was quite eventful and the success story cannot be complete without the media. The relationship we have had with you was quite remarkable since I came on board.
“On behalf of the House of Representatives, I thank you for your patriotic support for understanding the workings of the legislature. The image out there now is that the 7th Assembly has improved.
“The media oversight the National Assembly and you have always played a key role in nation building. I believe that the 8th Assembly will improve on our achievements.
