ICC condemns South Africa’s failure to arrest Bashir

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is disappointed that South Africa failed to arrest Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir, its deputy chief prosecutor James Stewart has told the AFP news agency.”Our position has always been that South Africa’s obligation is clear and unequivocal. It had an obligation to arrest him,” Mr Stewart said.

Mr Bashir flew out of a military base in South Africa, while a court was hearing an application brought by a rights group demanding that he should be handed over to the ICC to stand trial for alleged genocide and war crimes in Darfur.
