As Nigerian children marked the 2013 Children’s Day celebrated nationwide yesterday, it has been observed that widespread corruption is fast eating deep into the nation’s fabrics and poses a grave threat to the future of the Nigerian child and youth.
Bishop of Okigwe South Diocese, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. David Okechukwu Chikezie Onuoha made the observation yesterday while addressing newsmen at the Episcopal Villa, Ezeoke Nsu in Ehime Mbano LGA of Imo State.
Bishop Onuoha who remarked that Nigeria has over the years been struggling to build a nation that fulfils the dreams of her founding fathers regretted that the dreams for progressive and safe nation has remained elusive despite the nation’s abundant endowments in human, material and natural resources.
Decrying the lacklustre commitment of successive governments in fighting corruption headlong, Bishop Onuoha who is also the secretary of Nigerian House of Bishops, Anglican Communion accused Nigerian leaders of fighting corruption with kid gloves and being discriminatory in approach.
He maintained that youths must be made to take the centre stage in the nation’s affairs considering their high stake in the nation and called youths to demand 60 per cent of all appointive and elective positions in Nigeria to be reserved for those below the age of 40 years of age.
