Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State, has called on the federal government to implement the child’s rights law passed by the National Assembly in 2005 and also promote the rights of Nigerian children.
Jang stated this yesterday at the Children’s Day celebration held at the Rwang Pam Stadium, Jos.
The governor who was represented by the state commissioner for information, Nanle Dashen said “although the responsibility of ensuring the rights of the Nigerian child lies with the federal government but these cannot be fulfilled without the involvement of parents, civil societies, NGOs, donor agencies and private individuals.”
Speaking on the theme of the 2013 Children’s Day celebration: “Our Children Our Future, Our Collective Responsibility”, Jang said that the celebration brings to mind the collective responsibility of Nigerians to the future of the country, adding that a lot of children do not have access to quality education and lack other social amenities.
He said five out of every 1, 000 children born die before the age of five, adding that most children die of lack of care, poverty and hunger.
