Legal Defense and Assistance Project, LEDAP, has advocated for voter registration exercise in Nigerian prisons to guarantee the voting rights of prisoners.
The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, has filed a case against the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the Attorney General of Federation, AGF, on behalf Nigerian prisoners requesting for the registration of every Nigerian prisoner above the age of 18.
In a press statement signed by the national coordinator of LEDAP, Chino Obiagwu, and made available to Nigerian Pilot, LEDAP said that prisoners from the ages of 18 and above should have the right to vote and thus participate freely in the government of Nigeria.
LEDAP commended NHRC for the courage to speak up, and further expressed the gladness as not the only voice in this cause, stating categorically that it firmly stands for and on prisoners’ right to vote. LEDAP therefore called upon other public right defenders to do same.
