Tragedy struck in Otukpo, Benue State last Wednesday when a little girl of about 9 years old and daughter of Sgt Emmanuel Ekele, a serving policeman was shot dead by a boy a year older than her at No 18, Ekwo Omenka Street.
The incident occurred during a play between the victim and the boy who lived next door to her asked the girl to show him her father’s gun, a locally made pistol hidden under the bed.
The boy was said to have picked the pistol, which was loaded and aimed it at the girl, shooting her point blank.
The corpse of the deceased is said to have been deposited at the mortuary at the General Hospital Otukpo while the police has commenced investigation into the incident.
The Divisional Police Officer, DPO in Otukpo, Mr Francis Obinwa expressed shock at the incident while the killer is in police custody.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Otukpo local government council, Dr Innocent Onuh has condemned the resurgence of cult related activities experienced in Otukpo metropolis and said the development was capable of leading to a breakdown of law and order.
He said the police, anti robbery squad and the vigilante have been duly brief to handle the resurgence.
