The United Nations Industrial Development Organization, UNIDO and the Global Agenda Council Network of the World Economic Forum, WEF have initiated a new collaboration to promote job creation and support manufacturing capabilities. The joint initiative was signed in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirate, UAE by Augusto Luis Alcorta, Director of UNIDO’s Development Policy, Statistics and Strategic Research Branch, and Martina Gmür, Senior Director and Head of WEF’s Network of Global Agenda Councils. According to a statement by UNIDO, the signing took place during the sixth annual Summit on the Global Agenda, held in the United Arab Emirates’ capital on November 18-20 under the theme, “Driving Change through Collaboration”. It explained that the initiative, entitled the “Global Manufacturing Capabilities Forum”, aims to identify, analyse, discuss, and propose solutions as well as serve as a platform to address global manufacturing issues and business challenges. These, UNIDO listed include questions relating to global value chains and/or regional developments, and to examine policies for building manufacturing capabilities at the global level. It said the expected outcomes of the joint initiative include the elaboration of a joint UNIDO-WEF Global Manufacturing Capabilities Monitoring Report, which will assess the global state of manufacturing capabilities, and the implementation of suitable projects. “The World Economic Forum is an independent international organization committed to improving the state of the world by engaging business, political, academic and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas. “Its Global Agenda Council Network is a global community of over 1,500 premier thought leaders who are the foremost experts in their fields of academia, business, government, international organizations and society”, it stressed. The statement added that UNIDO is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability.
