Abuja Airport closed to arriving aircraft

The Nigerian Aviation authorities have closed the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja temporarily to all arriving aircraft following an incident involving a Boeing 747 cargo plane belonging to Saudi Air. A statement signed by Mr. Supo Atobatele, the general manager public affairs of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA explained that the aircraft marked K74798 on Wednesday, landed on runway 04 at 9.19 pm and rolled to the maintenance area of the air side causing substantial damage to its left wing. He stated that there were no casualties as the six souls onboard were evacuated safely. Atobatele said that the temporary closure will allow for the removal of the cargo jet from the spot of the incident, adding that NAMA had since issued a NOTAM (notice to air men) to that effect. According to him,“ shortly after the incident, the director general of NCAA, Captain Fola Akinkuotu, Engr. Nnamdi Udoh, managing director, NAMA, George Uriesi, the managing director ,FAAN and Capt. Muhtar Usman, commissioner, AIB were on ground to assess the situation.“
