Malaysia’s President elect Mahathir Mohamad becomes world’s oldest leader

Mahathir Mohamad is on course to become the world’s oldest elected leader at 92, after a shock victory in Malaysia’s bitterly fought election.

The former PM came out of retirement and defected to the opposition to take on his one-time protégé Najib Razak, beset by corruption allegations.

His historic win has ousted the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, which has been in power since independence in 1957.

Jubilant Mahathir supporters filled the streets as the victory became clear.

Mr Najib has said he will “accept the verdict of the people”, but correspondents say a smooth transition to power is not a given after such a major political upheaval.

No single party within the coalition won a majority, so technically it now rests with Malaysia’s king to decide who forms a government.

“Yes, yes, I am still alive,” Mr Mahathir told a news conference in the early hours of Thursday. He said his coalition would not seek revenge but would “restore the rule of law”.

He also announced – to cheers among his supporters – that there would be a two-day public holiday, adding: “But there will be no holidays for the winners.”

According to BBC, official results showed the opposition Pakatan Harapan – the Alliance of Hope – secured 113 of the 222 seats being contested, including some which have only ever been held by the government. BN took 79 seats.

Rising living costs and long-running allegations of corruption weighed heavily on many voters and saw them peel away from Mr Najib and his once unshakeable coalition.

“I feel that with this change we probably can see something better in the future,” Suva Selvan, a 48-year-old doctor, told AFP.

“Our hope for the future is a better government, fair, free and united.”

47 days of captivity: NCWS calls for Leah Sharibu’s release

The National Council of Women’s Societies (NCWS) on Thursday appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to do everything possible to ensure the release of Leah Sharibu.

Mrs Gloria Laraba Shoda, the President, NCWS, said that Leah Sharibu was the only Dapchi schoolgirl yet to be released by the Boko Haram insurgents 47 days after the other schoolgirls were released.

According to reports, 110 female students from Government Girls Science and Technical College (GGSTC) in Dapchi, Yobe, were abducted by Boko Haram insurgents on Feb. 19, 2018.

The insurgents released 104 of them to their families and school authorities on March 21, after they had spent one month and two days with their abductors.

They, however, kept Leah Sharibu in their custody, alleging that she refused to convert from Christianity to Islam.

The NCWS president said the Federal Government’s rapid response that ensured the release of 104 other kidnapped female students was very commendable.

She, however, added that the delay in releasing the only Christian girl among the 104 captives had become very worrisome.

According to Shoda, it has been 47 days since the release of the other 104 girls, but no news of Leah Sharibu.

“As mothers, the council is worried not knowing what her condition is and Nigerian women are praying to God to keep her safe.

“I want to believe that we all have freedom of worship. For a girl of 15 years to continuously be held captive for holding on to her faith is worrisome and I fear for this country.

“We are not forgetting the over 200 Chibok girls that were abducted in 2014 and over 100 that are yet to be released.

“This is not good for our country. We as citizens should have faith in our government to ensure our security.

“We are therefore calling on government at all levels to work harder to ensure the release of our daughters’’ she said.

A former Inspector General of Police, Sunday Ehindero, was on Thursday re-arraigned alongside a former police commissioner, John Obaniyi, on a six-count charge for alleged fraud.

The defendants were arraigned at an Apo District High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

They were accused of misusing N578 million (N557,995,065) donated by the Bayelsa State Government for the purchase of arms.

According to the charge, the fund was diverted into separate accounts owned by the defendants, where it generated an interest of N16, 412,315, Premium Times say.

The generated interest was allegedly used for the defendant’s personal objectives.

The charge also alleged that the defendants lied to officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, ICPC, when they told two of the commission’s staff upon enquiry about the diverted funds, that the generated interest was used for official purposes.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge.

It will be recalled that, Messrs Ehindero and Obaniyi were first arraigned in 2012 by the ICPC for the alleged offences.

They, however, filed a preliminary objection, challenging the competence of the charge against them and asked the trial court to suspend their trial pending the determination of the appeal at the higher court.

Following an order of the Supreme Court in December, however, the defendants were told to return to the trial court and face the charge against them.

Markle will be the second American and the first person of mixed race heritage to marry into the British royal family, Markle been a divorcee also means she will make history because she will be the first ‎American divorced woman who married into the British royal family without her spouse abdicating the throne. Recalling 1936, King Edward VIII intended to marry an American woman named Wallis Simpson and it sparked a constitutional crisis in Great Britain.

The engagement brought about lots of concern regarding the possible social significance of Meghan Markle becoming a proudly mixed-race royal which prompted controversial ‎comments from the public.

After the engagement, Markle began the process of becoming a British citizen. She still retains her U.S. Citizenship but Kensington palace indicated that the decision on retaining dual nationality by Markle is yet to be made.

Britain’s Prince Harry (R) and his US fiancee Meghan Markle

The wedding is to be held on a weekend, which is a break with the royal tradition of having weddings on a weekday‎. With a smaller ceremony and reception which will include most of whom have a direct relationship with the couple; the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will no doubt, go ‎down in history.

We have reduced fraud in MDAs via ICT- NITDA

National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, has disclosed that it has achieved a 90% at blocking Ministries, Department and Agencies, MDAs, from siphoning money using Information and Communications Technology in government offices in the country.

The Director General of the agency, Dr. Isa Pantami who made this known during a chat with journalists, shortly after he received the NUJ corporate friend of the media award recently in Abuja, noted that the agency may not be able to stop all of them but it has achieved 90% of blocking MDAs from steal government money through ITC.

Pantami said it was when he came on board that he discovered that there was need to regulate IT in the country.

According to him, “MDAs are no more using ICT to siphon money unnecessarily. We may not stop them all but I can say at least 90% has been blocked so far”.

According to him, “the first thing we started doing was to ensure that all IT projects in the MDAs are cleared, technically and professionally executed because before I came on board, many MDAs see that IT projects as a conduit for siphoning money because when they go for budget defense, most of our legislatures do not know what IT is all about”.

He added that, “So, people find it easy to manipulate them and the budget passed with unnecessary questions. With this IT clearance, huge amount of money has been saved, about N10bn so far, not to talk about the technical values added”.

The director general said through the regulation, we make sure we promote our cyber security. We create public awareness about cybersecurity as part of the regulation. We ensure that local companies, endogenous ICT products are deployed in the MDAs.

“We do not allow importation of IT products unless we discovered we do not have the capacity in the country, he said.

These are some of the initiatives we have taken, which by implication have been creating digital jobs, supporting our endogenous IT companies, and they are happy.

They say the level of patronage as of today is very high compared to before. This is a clear indication that the economy is being supported by this regulation.

With this award, by money, you will see new policies on board.

Enacting Anti-Hate Speech bill

There are many things that may be right but we need to be reoriented about them.

However, I personally do not support enacting any new law because most of the issues we are dealing with, if we follow our constitution, penal code, Cybercrime Act 2015, all these issues have been addressed.

For example, when you look at the right to privacy as amended, section 37 of the constitution addresses the issue.

When it comes to freedom of expression, constitution 1999 as amended, section 39 sub section 1, when it comes to regulating our utterances, respecting the law of the land, that has been addressed by section 39 sub section 3 of the constitution.

When you come to committing fraud or crime on the net, that has been addressed by Cybercrime Act of 2015. All these things have been addressed but the issue many Nigerians do not know cybercrime exist.

We need to create more publicity to reorient our society.

Before we go ahead enacting new laws, what we need to is to teach people self regulation, meaning that whatever I want to report, I need to do is to ask if it will promote unity because Nigeria needs unity in diversity.

We have a very serious diversity in the country and we need unity in this diversity because we do not have another country other than Nigeria. Millicent.

So, what we need to teach people is self-regulation. If there is anything happening in any part of the country, it must be reported in a way it will promote unity in the country.

The idea behind releasing information is to ensure that the right thing is being done.

What we need to do is to look at the constitution, penal code of Northern and Southern Nigeria and the 2015 Cybercrime Act, all these issues have been addressed by the law.

“We need Societal reorientation to promote peace, unity, justice and fairness and to ensure that whatever we write will in anyway promote peace, justice and equity in our country and not shading blood of innocent people.

Speaking on the award he said he consider the award as a challenge and a motivation for me to do more.

“I am not expecting Nigeria Union of Journalists to come and collect award without doing their background checks, without making an investigating about my personality, what I have been doing, and they found out that I deserve this award.

Nigerians laud NEC over abrogation of open grazing

$

AT LAST, the people of Benue and other states affected by attacks from Fulani herdsmen can heave a sigh of relief, as the National Economic Council, NEC, recently recommended the abrogation of open grazing across the country.
Leader of the Technical Committee of NEC and Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi, told State House Correspondents after a meeting chaired by Vice PresidentYemiOsinbajo that the panel submitted its report to the council which okayed the recommendation to ban open grazing and opted for the establishment of ranches in states affected by herdsmen onslaught.
It would be recalled that Benue State enacted a law banning open grazing of cattle and other livestock last year ostensibly to halt the excesses of Fulani herders who had since 2010 killed thousands of farmers.
Although the action of the state was lauded by men and women of goodwill across the country, Miyetti Allah KautalHore, a Fulani socio-cultural organisation, vowed never to obey the law and threatened to attack the state if it fails to repeal it and allow them and their herd free movement.
They made good their threat and since then the state has lost hundreds of people including the January 1 attack in Guma and Logo Local Government Areas where over 73 people lost their lives.
It was in the bid to find lasting solutions to the atrocities being committed by Fulani herders that NEC instituted a sub-committee headed by Governor Umahi and saddled it with the responsibility of unraveling the cause of the hostilities and dialogue with relevant stakeholders to prevent the killing of innocent people.
Prior to the ban by NEC, its technical sub-committee had hinted in Makurdi that herdsmen in Benue and NasarawaStates have agreed to adhere to the prohibition of open grazing but with conditions.
Umahi, while briefing newsmen, said the conditions given by the herdsmen bordered on more time to embrace ranching and for them to move to grazing reserves with the assistance of the federal government.
While it is not clear whether these conditions have been met or not, Umahiadded that NEC also agreed that states affected by herdsmen killings which include Benue, Taraba, Plateau, Adamawa and Kaduna will donate lands for the establishment of ranches that will include nomadic schools and health facilities for their family members.
“Niger and Kaduna have given lands, and Plateau is also giving a parcel of land. We also agreed that through the agriculture ministry, we have to introduce new species of cows.”
He explained that “ranching is being practised in Mambila in Taraba State and they have success stories.
“In all, we agreed that movement is not profitable to the herdsmen because they value the milk from the cow even more than the cow itself.
“So, movement is not healthy for the cows as it dries up the meat and give less than two litres of milk per cow per day.
“We condemn the invasion by foreign herdsmen and l am happy that the federal government is doing something about it.
“We also agreed that these movements have to stop and occasionally by those who have settled and integrated from other parts of the country like the middle belt, they sometimes go into conflict with farmers.
“So, in all we agreed that there is a more profitable and modern way of raising these cows which is by ranching. We have agreed that the states involved are going to give lands’’.
Expectedly, the abrogation of open grazing has elicited various reactions from Nigerians. AbdulrahmanAnofiu, an Abuja-based lawyer, who lauded the decision, said it is a step that government should have taken long before now. According to him, “It is better late than never. I think it is the way to go and the support of every Nigerian is needed to end the killings.”
Another lawyer‎, Ehirim Matthew, said any step that will halt the killing is welcome. “I think every reasonable Nigerian should join hands with government to ensure that normalcy returns to the troubled areas. We should stop playing politics with the lives of Nigerians,” he said.
GarbaBusari, on his part, blamed government for allowing the people of Benue to be pushed to the wall before taking steps. “We can’t continue this way. Something very urgent should be done to bring an end to the killings in this country, not just in Benue State’’.
On its part, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, MACBAN, said it is not against anything that would bring an end to the crisis so long as the interest of pastoralists is considered. National Secretary of the group, Baba Usman, told newsmen that “we are not opposed to anything that will bring peace in the country.
“The crisis is worrisome to everybody. Pastoralists and farmers are not at peace with the way things are going. The crisis has become a national security problem and everybody must agree to measures taken by the federal government for the sake of peace.
“Pastoralists only need water and grass and once that is provided, they will not want to be moving around. We don’t have issues so long as the policy will take into cognisance the peculiarities of the pastoralists,” he said
While lauding Governor Samuel Ortom for leading the popular movement to redefine cattle breeding in the country, Gen. Jeremiah Useni, rtd, said his foresight in championing the cause for Nigeria to adopt ranching which he said is the global best practice in animal husbandry is commendable. He described the governor as “a courageous person who sees ahead and the kind we crave for in Nigeria’’
He stated this when he visited Benue for the burial of Brig. Gen. Stephen Ikya at Tse-Ikya, Mbagbera in Vandeikya Local Government Area.
The former army chiefalso commended Ortom for always bringing to the public domain the issues of killings and attacks on his people, stressing that Benue is lucky to have him.
The senator representing Plateau South advised the people to support his efforts, as according to him, “theyare the hallmarks of a visionary, vibrant and selfless leader. The National Assembly is behind the governor in the struggle because he has shown uncommon leadership qualities that should be emulated.
Also reacting to the development, former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, AlhajiAbubakarTsav, lauded the decision. “It is a victory for Benue people because the governor championed it and the federal government embraced it. So Ortom should be credited for coming out with it. It is indeed a victory for the government and people of Benue and Nigerians in general.
“No doubt if they ban open grazing and provide land for ranching, that would solve the problem. It will check the killings occasioned by farmers/herders crisis. It will also put a check to cattle rustling’’.
On his part, Chairman of Benue Tribal Leaders, Chief Edward Ujege, said “NEC’s decision is a welcome development. It is what we have repeatedly said. It is good that they have seen reason in our agitation.
“The only thing is that the acquisition of land for ranching should follow the wishes of the people. It should not be that government would just come in and forcefully take land from the locals. It has to be according to the laws made by the various Houses of Assembly in order to avoid friction.”
Also reacting to the development, GovernorOrtom, who is also a member of the NEC sub-committee, lauded the recommendation, saying it will put an end to the incessant attacks and killing of Benue farmers.
The governor, who made the commendation while chatting with newsmen at the Government House, Makurdi, recently, also commended the vice president for setting up the committee that went out to assess the deplorable situation in states where farmers have been displaced from their ancestral homes as a result of attack by herders.
He also acknowledged the decision of the Northern Governors Forum, NGF, which a few months ago met in Kaduna and adopted ranching as the only option to halt the challenge of herdsmen/farmers crises.
Ortom, who reiterated that ranching remains the best option in cattle rearing, said “Like they say, the population of Nigeria by projection will be 415 million and if we have approximately 200 million and we are having this challenge, by the time we double that population, where are we going to be? Where will you have the land for open grazing?
“In fact, it may interest you to know that the total herd of cattle that we have in Nigeria is estimated to be less than 20 million that is for cattle. But you have over 300 million in India, you have over 250 in Brazil, you have over 300 in America, but they all ranch. You have not heard about farmers/herdsmen clash. So it is the right way to go. I commend NEC.
“Those insurgents who are still going about killing our people are not out for cattle business or cattle rearing, they are out for a different agenda and we are not going to accept that kind of agenda to manifest in Benue.”
Also speaking on the development, Benue State Deputy Governor, Engr. Benson Abounu, who attended the NEC meeting where the decision was taken, described it as “a vindication of the position of Benue that crop production and animal husbandry cannot co-exist and that the best way to guarantee peace between farmers and herdsmen is ranching of animals.
“Benue has been in the fore-front of the campaign for ranching in this country, standing its ground in the face of intimidation and threats; realising that it offers more benefit to herdsmen, crop farmers and the entire country.
“I am happy that NEC finally accepted the position. I am optimistic that it would put a halt to persistent farmers/herdsmen clashes in the country,” Abounu maintained.
A former member of the House of Representatives and Chairperson of Benue Women’s Forum, Mrs. Rebecca Apedzan, wondered why states like Nasarawa and Kogi originally mentioned by NEC were not in the list of those that embraced ranching.
“Government by that decision wants to go for ranching in some states, but on the list, Nasarawa and Kogi were not included. If they want to be sincere, Kogi and Nasarawa should be on the list of states where they want to start ranching.
“They said ranching will be introduced in five states and that they would provide amenities for them just like the colony they talked about. So, perhaps, they just want to introduce the colony thing through the back door.
“I don’t think Benue has such land for that. What business has government with ranching for herdsmen who are into private business. They should allow those who rear cows to go and do their ranching.
“Why is the federal government taking tax payers’ money to build ranches? Are they also going to do farms for farmers or piggery for us? Whereas the ban is a welcome development, it shouldn’t be government’s business to build ranches.”
Also speaking, Southern Kaduna Indigenous Progressive Forum, SKPIF, expressed displeasure that governmentwants to purchase large swaths of land for the exclusive settlement of Fulani herdsmen in the name of ranching.
According to SKPIF’s spokesman, Luka Binniyat: “We believe that the so-called new “ranches” are the same with “cattle colonies” and “grazing reserves” because it still amounts to grabbing scarce land resources of farmers and handing them over to pastoralists to own as their own new found lands.”
Perhaps, to ensure proper transition from nomadic way of grazing cattle to that of ranching, the National Commission for Nomadic Education, NCNE, recently, commenced the training of over 100 Nomadic Education Field Level Extension Agents and Officers on modern cattle ranching.
The training, which drew participants from the six geo-political zones, was meant to curb the incessant conflict between pastoralists and farmers.
Speaking at the opening ceremony in Zaria, Kaduna State, its Executive Secretary, Prof. Bashir Usman, said the training was designed for field extension agents to promote the adoption of intensive livestock production and create critical field officers knowledgeable in ranching.
According to him, the training will provide staff with the necessary skills to guide and direct pastoralists on how to key into the new system of production, acquaint participants with the roles and responsibilities of critical stakeholders on ranching.
“Implementation of the ranching system entails the provision of the requisite resource and infrastructure to serve as a window of opportunities for livestock producers to have access to improved production facilities.”
He observed that the transformation and modernisation of Nigeria’s livestock industry entails a paradigm shift from the predominantly extensive and uncoordinated tradition to a more formal and systematic industry of ranching or intensive livestock production system.
“This training workshop is significant in many ways and it is of course apt and timely toward reducing incessant conflicts between farmers and pastoralists,” Usman stated.
In his speech, the Acting Director, Department of Extension Education and Skills Development, Dr. Abdu Umar Ardo, said the training would provide participants with the opportunity to acquire new knowledge and skills.
“This training will provide participants with the opportunity to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge needed for the successful implementation of ranching for the overall improvement of access and quality basic education, as well as quality of life of their teaming clientele,” Ardo said.
On his part, the Chairman, Governing Board of the commission, Prof. GidadoTahir, said the training would provide very practical and relevant approaches that would be useful insights on ranching, peace building and conflict resolution and management.
He said the training would also provide the trainees with strategies that would enable them effectively interface with pastoralists with a view to broadening their understanding.
Tahir said it would similarly accelerate the process of adoption, as well as facilitate increased access to quality and functional basic education to nomads.

Timi Frank to APC, Buhari,Don’t overlook nPDP’s 7-day ultimatum

Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Timi Frank, yesterday, admonished the ruling party and President Muhammadu Buhari not to overlook a seven-day ultimatum given by members of the defunct new Peoples Democratic Party, nPDP.
Reacting to the ultimatum issued by the aggrieved APC members, Frank said if nothing is done as demanded to address the alleged ‘maltreatment and exclusion’ of the nPDP members it will give an impression that “we are no longer needed in the APC’’.
In a statement signed in Abuja, Frank said KawuBaraje spoke the mind of their group, adding that it will be dangerous for President Buhari and the leadership of the APC to give a deaf hear to “our grievances.”
According to him, what the group is asking for is to be given fair hearing and equal stake in the change project as it was given to other groups.
“Apart from being sidelined, our people are also the most harassed within the party from the Senate President,BukolaSaraki, Senator Dino Melaye, myself and many others. These and other reasons called for a roundtable renegotiation.
“Since the APC came into power in 2015, there have been deliberate efforts by government at the center and the national leadership of the party to sideline members of the new PDP when compared to other blocs that make up the APC.”
While emphasizing on the need to honour the seven-day ultimatum given by their leader, Frank also said since the APC came into power only the Minister of Transport, RotimiAmeachi, and that of Women Affairs, Mama Taraba, were given appointments among the nPDP members despite their unquantifiable contributions to bring the APC to power.
“If President Buhari will be fair to all groups and blocs of the APC, we expect him to urgently order for an emergency meeting where the grievances will be resolved, that is, if he still cares about the interest of the oppressed.
“The meeting we are calling for at this point is important, as it will enable us to renegotiate our interest within the APC and whether we can continue to bear the maltreatment or not,” Frank stated.

Group bemoans political apathy in South-East

Igbo interest group, South-East Political Summit, SEPS, has blamed lack of political awareness and apathy among the people of the region to lack of selfless leaders that can spur them into action.
The group said it is prepared to be in the vanguard for political reawakening in the South-East.
It made this known in a press conference held yesterday in Enugu.
Leader of the group, Madam Eberechukwu Anigbogu, noted that “the apathy, cultural surrender and political ignorance that has ravaged our territory and reduced us to mere spectators in the political struggle of the last 20 years is the reason why we have decided to take the bull by the horn.
“Ndigbo need to be told that 33 years ago in 1985 when Okpara died, his body was kept in the morgue so that a bungalow could be erected at his place for his burial. Although we should honour our leaders while they are alive, Okpara is an example of selfless service.
“South-East must be administered by those chosen by the people and not by anti-people politicians who play agency role for forces outside our political space,” she said.
She revealed that the objective of the group, which has an alliance with other notable pan-Igbo socio-political organisations, is to chart a new course towards the political and economic rebirth of the South- East through political education and sensitisation of the people.
“There is an enormous degree of burden placed on our shoulders to chart a new course for our people so that we can remove the curse caused by political lethargy and its attendant socio-economic downturn.
“There is a yawning vacuum that needs urgent attention, to be filled by alternative statesmen who have the interest of the people at heart, to rescue our political space from the doldrums of political somnambulism.
“Those who want to lead us must be people of proven integrity, men and women for who politics is not merchandise. Any party that fields a candidate that has credibility problem or has a can of worms would have itself to blame because we have resolved to take our destinies in our hands,” she said.
The group also revealed that it hasmobilised enough members in all the wards and local governments across the entire South-East tasked with ensuring that selfish politicians are no longer imposed on the people by the ruling class.
They pointed out in the press conference with the theme, “Reinventing the political consciousness of the South East,” that they will sensitiseNdigbo that time has come when they will elect political leaders of their choice not those imposed on them from Abuja.
They lamented that it is because the people are not allowed to elect leaders that will lead them, that roads and other infrastructure are not being provided and when provided, falls short of expectation because the leaders don’t owe allegiance to the people that they are leading.

State Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, ChindoDafat, said the arrest and prosecution of the immediate past Governor of Plateau State, Senator Jonah Jang, is long overdue.

He made this known while speaking with our correspondent in Jos
”Nobody should be seen to be above the law.The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is doing its legitimate duty and none should interfere in its affairs.
“If they have been holding Jang since Monday, it should be for a purpose. Justice must be seen to be done to all irrespective of whatever status,” he said.

As political activities gather momentum, President, National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, Ambassador MurtalaGarba, has warned politicians against recruiting Nigerian youths as thugs in the 2019 general elections.
Murtala stated this yesterday in Abuja at a town hall mentorship discourse organised by the council to proffer solutions to the challenges facing youths in their quest for a better life.
The theme of the discourse, “Quality Education, a tool for Peace, Security and Sound Economy for Youth Development of a Nation,” focused on the imperative of good and affordable education, drawing reference from the early 60s to late 70s when the rot in the education system was yet to assume a worrisome level.
According to the NYCN president, “Part of the agenda of this programme is the use of youths as thugs during elections by politicians. We would like to use this opportunity to pass the message to Nigerian youths that we must be very careful with the kind of people we take as our mentors. Be careful of those who give you peanuts to attack others and destroy your future.
“We say no to anyone who will call on youths to take on others on his behalf. We call on the youths to get their Permanent Voters Cards, PVCs, and register with any political party of their choice. We should support whoever we feel can rescue this nation. This time around, youths should not only support others, they should come out and contest for elective positions.”
On the reason for the discourse, Garba said: “We feel it is very important this time around to know what mentorship is all about and who should be mentoring the youths. We organised this discourse and I want to say it is not political or religious. It is simply a mentorship discourse. Nigerians youths also need to make their feelings known to government. We need to know what we can get from government both at the state and the federal level and also how we can contribute our quota to the growth of our nation.”
Also speaking at the event, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political Matters, Gideon Sammani, tasked the youths to keep faith with President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, stating that in no distant future; Nigerians would realise that the president means well for the nation and its citizens.

Midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has assured that the Super Eagles will be ready for action ahead of pre-World Cup friendly matches against the Democratic Republic of Congo, England and the Czech Republic.

Nigeria host the Leopards of the DR Congo in Port Harcourt on May 28, before a prestige clash with England’s Three Lions at Wembley Stadium in Londonon on June 2 and an encounter with the Czech Republic in Vienna on June 6.

“We are not focusing on any particular game; we are getting ready to face all the teams that we have to play before the World Cup. It is the right mentality to approach the games.

“I have been asked several questions about the match against England, but I tell people that the England match is very important, just like the other matches that we have to play. What is key for us is to get into the right psychological state to confront every opposition that lie ahead, including those that will be waiting at the FIFA World Cup,” Onazi told NFF from his base in Turkey.

Former FIFA U17 World Cup silver –winning midfielder Onazi, who played for Nigeria at the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil, dismissed feelings that the team would be over-confident going into the FIFA World Cup following victories in friendlies against Argentina and Poland.

“There is nothing like over-confidence. What I can say is that we are a very ambitious team and we will always be ready to play any team. Yes, we defeated Argentina and Poland, but that has not in any way generated feelings of over-confidence in the camp. We are focused and have our heads on our shoulders.

“For us, humility and hard work will be the winning words going ahead. Our preparation is going on well and we are happy with that. At the World Cup, we will come up against different teams with different styles and approaches of play. It is important that we are adequately prepared and we appreciate the games that the NFF has lined up for us,” said the Trabzonspor of Turkey ace.

The Eagles clash with the Democratic Republic of Congo at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, before flying to London for the match against England at Wembley. Four days later, they will trade tackles with the Czech Republic at the Rudolf Tonn Stadium, just outside Vienna.

I don’t have many star players in Eagles – Rohr

Head coach of Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has admitted that he does not have a lot of star players in his squad.
However, Rohr says with team and tactical discipline, Nigeria can go far at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
“In the team we are working on improving all segments of the game, only if you have everything you need, you can succeed in today’s football.
“I said already, today I do not have a lot of stars, but we want to have a big team with a winning mentality, great discipline in the field and beyond, and a great deal of mutual solidarity and communion. This is the way to success,” he told Sportske Novosti. Rohr also spoke about recent friendlies with Argentina, Poland and Serbia.

Friendlies are completely different from the matches at the mundial. Friendly games are like an experiment in the lab, while matches in the World Cup are realistic, real life.

“I do not bother too much of the victories and defeats in the preparatory games, we are focused on building the best teams for the World Cup,” he added.

How Enugu bigwigs traded words over APC congress

$

The 2019 general elections is around the corner and the main opposition party in Enugu State, the All Progressives Congress, APC, has boasted that it will take over power from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.It boasted that it is the party to beat and has been doing underground work by poaching political bigwigs in the state.
For instance, a former founding member of the PDP and former governor of old Anambra State, Chief Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo, is now in the APC, while a former Senate President, Chief Ken Nnamani; former governor of Enugu State, Barrister Sullivan Chime, as well as former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Eugene Odo, have all switched over to the APC.
With this caliber of men now swelling the ranks of the APC in Enugu State, it should send jitters down the political spine of the ruling party. However, events have shown that intra-party wrangling and squabbles may not allow the opposition party to lift the Olympus and displace the PDP in any election in the state.
Shortly after the 2015 electionin which the APC clinched power at the centre, it has been imbued in crisis as the Ben Nwoye-led executive and some party stalwarts were accused of misappropriating funds during the election. The crisis eventually snowballed into a conflagration that almost denied Nwoye the chairmanship of the party and at the end, created a parallel leadership led by Nwoye’s former deputy, Mr. AdolphusUde.
At a stage, the crisis switched from Nwoye and Ude and spread to Abuja as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, and aide to President Muhammadu Buhari on Justice Reforms, Mrs. Juliet Ibekaku, wanted to use their influence and power to dictate what happens in Enugu State, while the Director-General, Voice of Nigeria, VON, Mr. OsitaOkechukwu, joined the Nwoye-led executive.
The crisis came to a head last Saturday during the just concluded ward congresses of the party nationwide.
Till this day, the outcome of the congress is still in contention as some adjudgedit to be free and fair, while others voiced out their dissent for all to hear.
The minister of foreign affairs, on Monday, called for the cancellation of the result of the ward congress, stressing that the exercise was highly flawed.
Onyeama made the call, even as the director-general of VON described the exercise as “peaceful and transparent”.
Briefing newsmen at Golden Royal Hotel in company of the special adviser to the president on judicial reform and other chieftains of the party, the minister alleged that election materials and party officials sent to conduct the congress absconded with the materials.
He said up till the time of the briefing he, as the leader of the party in Enugu State, had neither seen officials sent from Abuja nor the election materials.
“As I speak, I have not seen materials for this congress neither have I seen the officials from Abuja who are supposed to monitor the congress.
“I am supposed to be the leader of this party in Enugu State, but I can tell you that I didn’t see officials who were supposed to conduct the congress or even know them.
“The congress was heart-warming; you can see the enthusiasm of the people who came out here and every transparent process of voting. I am very happy and satisfied with what we have seen.
“I have come here to preach peace and transparency. We don’t believe in grabbing power at all cost. Mr. President has said it a million and one times that we don’t believe in having a non-transparent process.
“So I have come here to witness the process by myself, to be part of the process and make sure it is an inclusive and transparent. That is what we have come here to do.”
Countering Onyeama while addressing the press, Okechukwu described the congress as peaceful and rancour free.
“To the best of my knowledge, nobody was marginalised nor any material hijacked. Please ask anybody who complains of marginalisation to show you the bank slip that he used to buy forms and was denied buying forms?
“The forms can be bought from either the national or state secretariat. Mrs. Ibekaku and her hatchet man, EjikeNjeze, for instance, deliberately alienated the grassroots structure and hoped to reap where they didn’t sow.
“Is it possible to win from Abuja? Njeze kept deceiving my brother, the minister of foreign affairs, telling him all manner of lies. He made him to come late to the ward congress at 1pm after it has ended.
“All the major stakeholders from our elder statesmen, His Excellences Jim Nwobodo, Ken Nnamani, Emma Eneukwu, EmperorBaywoodIbe to Group Captain Orji all commended the peaceful and successful ward congress.
“Only a handful is complaining. As they say the majority will surely have their way and the minority will have their say”, Okechukwu said.
As if to lend credence to Okechukwu’sjudgment of the congress as very peaceful and transparent, an appeal panel was quickly set up by the National Executive Committee, NEC, of the APC to Enugu State led by Charles Babagbale. The panel has commenced sitting and appealed to all aggrieved members who have complaints against the conduct of the primaries to come forward with their petitions.
Addressing journalists at the state party secretariat, Babagbale said the panel so far has received only one petition.
He called on aggrieved members to formally come forward with their complaints to enable them look into it.
According to him, reports reaching the panel indicate that congresses actually took place across the states contrary to allegations by some aggrieved members that the exercise did not take place.
Babagbale disclosed that for now, the three-man panel is not in a position to ascertain whether there was a parallel congress or not as alleged by some aggrieved members.
Addressing newsmen, the APC Chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye, posited that congresses were very successful in the 260 wards across the 17 local governments, adding that for the first time, party members trooped out en-masse to vote for candidates of their choice without inducement.
Nwoye said Onyemais being economical with the truth, insisting that he failed to follow laid down rules and regulations guiding the conduct of the congress.
He said it is unfortunate that the minister rather than come to the state party secretariat to get the necessary information from the congress committee that came from national headquarters of the party in Abuja, chose to hold his own meeting in a hotel.
He accused him of instigating the crisis and creating an impression that there were parallel congresses in the state whereas there was none, stressing that “you don’t create a parallel structure through wishful thinking”.
The APC chairman, however, expressed happiness that chieftains of party in the state adjured the congress as peaceful and hitch-free.
Political watchers are of the opinion that the tottering opposition party in Enugu State may continue to wobble in their quest to take over power unless they put their house in order because many in the state feel that the ruling party under the leadership of GovernorIfeanyiUgwuanyi is doing well.Unless they put behind their bickering and skirmishes, they should forget 2019 as far as Enugu State is concerned. And from the look of things, an end to the intraparty wrangling is not in sight.
