Customs intercepts, destroys N12m frozen foods in Ogun

Ogun state customs command yesterday destroyed a truck load of frozen foods intercepted at Sagamu interchange enroute Onitsha after the item was intercepted by men of the command.
The Command said the 2, 500 cartons of frozen foods was covered with cellophane bags in a truck at the Sagamu interchange of the Lagos -Benin expressway.
The frozen foods, which Duty Payable Value, DPV was put at N12 million, were intercepted at the Shagamu interchange, while on its way to Onitsha market in Anambra State.
One of the culprits, Ogonna Okoye, who claimed possession of about 70 cartons of the item, was apprehended with the contrabands disguised as bottled water in a DAF truck marked (EDO) XB 302 URM.
Speaking to newsmen at the site where the contrabands were destroyed, Okoye said he was tricked by the principal owner of the frozen foods to follow the truck to Onitsha market.
He said the principal owner, whom he identified by his code name, “Ibudu”, assured him that he had settled all the security agencies that could disrupt their journey from Egbeda area where the materials were loaded to Onitsha market in Anambra state.
The suspects explained that the driver of the vehicle took to his heels after the vehicle was stopped by the officers.
