Youths under the auspices of Benue Youth in Diaspora Association have called on the federal government to wade into the lingering crisis between the Tiv farmers of Benue state and alleged Fulani herdsmen in the state.
The group which, condemned the loss of lives and property occasioned by the crisis, said government’s indifference had contributed to the persistence in these clashes.
In a statement signed by its president general, Comrade Philip Agbese, the group also critisised what it called the inability of security agencies in the state to bring under control “this persistent crisis which has even exhibited itself around the mobile police barracks in the state”.
It said: “Is it not indicting or embarrassing to hear that with the presence of these security agencies, the state has been turned into a killing field, with Fulani taking at will people’s livelihood.
“Preposterous is the fact that the most recent attacks have all been carried out around the vicinity of the mobile police barracks along Makurdi-Naka road, sacking all the occupants around it. We ask, where then is our refuge?”
The youth demanded that the federal government constitutes an inquisition into the constant occurrence of the violence.
It appealed to the federal government to give succour and compensation to victims of the attacks, whom it said had lost property worth millions of naira to the incidents.
